International League named players of the week

April 23, 2007 - International League (IL1) News Release

The International League announced today that Indianapolis catcher Ryan Doumit and Toledo pitcher Virgil Vasquez have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher-of-the-Week for the period from April 16-22. Each becomes the first member of their respective clubs to win an IL weekly award in 2007.

Indianapolis catcher RYAN DOUMIT was the single biggest source of run production in the International League over the past seven days, driving in 11 runs and scoring six more in the seven-game stretch. Doumit began the season as the third catcher in Pittsburgh, but was assigned to Indianapolis April 8. In his first seven games with the Indians, Doumit hit .440, but drove in only four runs. On April 17 at Norfolk, Doumit matched that output with one swing of the bat when he crushed a grand slam in the 7th inning off of Andy Mitchell. Doumit drove in five runs total in the 7-5 victory over the Tides, and his monster week was only getting started. Over the next three days, Doumit went 7-13 with a home run, 6 RBI, and five runs scored. Indianapolis won all three games. Doumit has firmly established himself as one of the IL's top sluggers of the young season. He now leads the League in batting with a .435 average and in RBI with 15. He is also among the League leaders in hits (T-2nd, 20), on-base percentage (2nd, .526), slugging percentage (2nd, .717), and runs scored (4th, 13). Doumit becomes the first member of the Indians to be honored as IL Batter-of-the-Week since Ty Wigginton (August 15-21, 2005).

26-year-old Ryan Doumit is in his 9th season in the Pittsburgh organization after being selected by the Pirates in the 2nd round of the 1999 draft. He first reached the Triple-A level in 2005 when he hit .345 with 12 HR and 35 RBI in 51 games with Indianapolis. Doumit has played in 140 games at the Major League level, hitting .236 with 12 HR and 52 RBI. Doumit is a native of Moses Lake, WA.

After going 0-2 with a 7.45 ERA in his first two starts of the year, Toledo's VIRGIL VASQUEZ dominated a pair of outings against the Durham Bulls to even his record at 2-2. Vasquez left little room for argument as to his selection as IL Pitcher-of-the-Week after tossing 11.0 scoreless innings and striking out 19 batters. No other IL hurler won two games over the past seven days, and none came close to matching his 19 strikeouts. Vasquez earned his first victory of the 2007 season April 16 in his first home outing. He held the Bulls to just three hits and one walk over 5.0 innings, striking out 9 along the way. Tim Byrdak and Jason Karnuth each followed with 2.0 scoreless innings to preserve the shutout and give the Mud Hens a 6-0 victory. Saturday evening in Durham, Vasquez again took the hill against the Bulls, and the result was nearly a carbon copy of Monday's performance. Vasquez allowed four hits and one walk in 6.0 scoreless innings, striking out 10 Bulls as Toledo cruised to a 10-2 win. Vasquez now has 28 strikeouts through his first four starts, best in the International League. He is also tied for 3rd with 20.2 innings pitched.

24-year-old Virgil Vasquez made his Triple-A debut last fall in Game 2 of the Governors' Cup Finals, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings of relief against Rochester. Other than that September promotion, Vasquez spent the entire season at Double-A Erie where he went 7-12 with a 3.73 ERA. His best work for Erie came in August and September when he went 3-2 with a 2.58 ERA and 43 strikeouts in seven starts. Vasquez is a native of Santa Barbara, CA.
