Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis catcher Ryan Doumit (pronounced "DOE-mit") has been named the International League's Batter of the Week for the period of April 16-22. Doumit recorded a .423 batting average, .692 slugging percentage, two home runs and 11 RBI in seven games during the stretch.
Through 13 Triple-A games, Doumit leads the International League with a .435 BA and 15 RBI. The 26-year-old also ranks among league leaders in on-base percentage (.526, 2nd), slugging (.717, 2nd), hits (20, T-2nd) and runs scored (13, 4th).
Doumit registered a nine-game hitting streak from April 11-21 (.514 BA, 18-for-35, 11 R, 3 HR, 15 RBI). The native of Moses Lake, Wash., is hitting .500 (13-for-26) on the road and .350 (7-for-20) at home this year.
"This award is no surprise to me because Ryan is an excellent hitter," Indians Manager Trent Jewett says. "He's been a tremendous asset to this team from an offensive standpoint, but I'm most proud of the strides he's made defensively. I've really been impressed with how he's worked behind the plate this year."
Doumit leads the Tribe in multi-hit games (7) and multi-RBI contests (5). On April 17, he belted the Tribe's first grand slam since Aug. 28, 2006. The switch-hitter is batting .571 against left-handed pitchers and .410 vs. right-handed hurlers.
"It's always a bonus when you have a switch-hitter who is capable of hitting for both average and power," Jewett adds. "I really think Ryan has the potential for a tremendous career."
Doumit is in his ninth season with the Pittsburgh organization after being selected by the Pirates in the second round of the 1999 draft. He first reached the Triple-A level in 2005 when he hit .345 with 12 HR and 35 RBI in 51 games for the Indians. Doumit has played in 140 Major League affairs, hitting .236 with 12 HR and 52 RBI.
Doumit is the first Indian to earn the award since infielder Ty Wigginton was recognized on Aug. 22, 2005.
Indianapolis continues its six-game homestand on Monday with a 7 p.m. tilt against Richmond. Tickets for all home games are available by visiting the Victory Field Box Office at 501 W. Maryland Street, going on-line at www.IndyIndians.com or calling Ticketmaster at 317-239-5151.
