TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Harrisburg Senators will meet in the opener of a six-game series...The Flying Squirrels rallied for five runs in the top of the ninth inning and a Chris Dominguez two-run homer help lift Richmond to a 7-5 series-clinching win on Wednesday afternoon in front of 6,920 fans at New Britain Stadium.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Left-hander Clayton Tanner gets the start in the series-opener for the Flying Squirrels...Making his 16th start of the season...Enters the season rated as the #30 prospect in the Giants farm system according to Baseball America...Making his first start since being placed on the Disabled List 7/2 (hamstring)...Activated from the DL 7/21...Received a no-decision in his last outing 7/1 at Reading...Allowed three runs on eight hits in five innings...Struck out one batter and walked none...Allowed three runs on four hits with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning...Allowed the leadoff batter to reach in four of his five innings on the mound...Recorded eight groundouts and five flyouts/popouts...Threw 64 pitches, 41 strikes...Threw 24 pitches combined in his first three innings...Threw 40 pitches combined in his final two frames...Threw first-pitch strikes to 14 of the 22 batters that he faced...Spent the entire 2010 season with Richmond and went 9-9 with a 3.68 ERA in 27 starts...Struck out 79 batters and walked 64 in 149 innings...Named an Eastern League Mid-Season All-Star, but did not pitch in the game...Finished the season ninth in the EL in ERA...Member of the San Francisco Giants 40-man roster...Selected in the third round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft.
Right-hander Erik Davis gets the start in the series-opener for the Senators...Making his 17th appearance and 16th start of the 2011 season...Suffered the loss in his last outing 7/16 against Akron...Allowed six runs, five earned, on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings...Struck out four batters and walked a season-high five...Is 1-1 with a 3.27 ERA (4ER/11 IP) in two starts against the Flying Squirrels...Three of the five runs he has allowed against Richmond came in the first innings in his last start at The Diamond 7/9...Has struck out 13 batters, including 10 on 7/9, and has walked two in 11 innings against the Flying Squirrels...Lone relief appearance came in his first outing of the season 4/11 against New Britain in a game started by Henry Rodriguez who was on MLB rehab from the Nationals...Acquired by the Washington Nationals from the San Diego Padres in exchange for infielder Alberto Gonzalez 3/28/11...Appeared at three different levels in the Padres farm system in 2010 (Advanced-A, Double-A, Triple-A)...Began the 2010 season with Advanced-A Lake Elsinore and went 9-3 with a 3.82 ERA in 19 starts...Struck out 91 batters and walked 34 in 99 innings...Made one spot-start with Triple-A Portland 7/23/10 at Las Vegas and earned the win, allowing two runs on three hits in five innings...Promoted to Double-A San Antonio and made his debut 8/4/10 at Corpus Christi allowing five runs on seven hits in four innings and receiving a no-decision...Allowed two runs or less in each of his final six starts with the Missions...Went 4-0 in seven starts overall with a 2.75 ERA...Struck out 35 batters and walked 12 in 39 1/3 innings...Opponents hit .210 (29-for-183) against him...Spent the entire 2009 season with Low-A Fort Wayne and went 16-6 with a 3.64 ERA in 32 games, 19 starts...Went 12-5 with a 3.69 ERA in his 19 starts and limited opponents to a .238 batting average against...Tied for the Midwest League lead in wins (16) and finished ninth in ERA (3.64)...Made pro debut with Short-Season A Eugene in 2008 and went 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in 14 games, five starts...Originally selected by the San Diego Padres in the 13th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft...Attended Stanford University.
ONE-HORNED PEGASUS: The Flying Squirrels won for the first time when trailing after eight innings yesterday as the club scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning to rally past the New Britain Rock Cats 7-5 in the series-finale...Three teams in the Eastern League (Akron, Portland, and Harrisburg) are still winless when trailing after eight innings...Yesterday's victory for Richmond also matched its largest comeback win of the season as the club trailed New Britain 4-0 after six innings and 5-1 after seven frames...The club also overcame a four-run deficit on Opening Day, also against New Britain, battling out of a 4-0 hole to record a 6-4 win.
MAGIC NUMBER: The Flying Squirrels improved to 25-2 when scoring six or more runs in a game with yesterday's 7-5 win at New Britain...One of the club's two losses when scoring six or more runs occurred in the series opener with the Rock Cats on Monday night...Overall in the series, Richmond scored 20 runs and is hit .324 (36-for-111) with 14 extra-base hits including 12 doubles, a triple and a home run...The club is 25-43 when scoring five runs or less.
THE GEORGIA PEACH: Second baseman Charlie Culberson went 2-for-4 yesterday with a double, a walk, and a run scored...Culberson leads the club with 24 doubles and also has the team lead with 33 extra-base hits...The 22-year-old posted hits in six of seven games on the recently-completed road trip and hit .419 (13-for-31) with four doubles, four RBIs, and four runs scored...Overall over his last 23 games, Culberson is hitting .355 (33-for-93) and he has raised his batting average from .248 to .274 over that span.
ROGER THAT!: Outfielder Roger Kieschnick has hits in six straight games, his team-leading sixth hit streak of five games or more...The 24-year-old is batting .360 (9-for-25) over that span with two doubles, a triple, two home runs, four RBIs, and six runs scored...The Eastern League Mid-Season All-Star leads the club with 11 home runs and is one away from matching Thomas Neal's single-season record.
PITCHING IN: The Flying Squirrels pitching staff leads the Eastern League with a 3.25 ERA through 95 games and has allowed a league-low 356 runs...Richmond's pitching staff has allowed two runs or less in 35 of its 95 games (37%)...Starting pitching has allowed three runs or less in 66 of the team's 95 games (69%) and the club is 44-22 in those contests.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN: The Flying Squirrels are in the middle of a stretch where they are playing 14 of 20 games on the road...Overall, the club is 18-28 on the road, and is batting .216 and averaging 3.46 runs per game (159R/46G) in 46 road contests...The club recently completed a stretch where it played 19 out of 26 games at home, going 16-10 overall including an 13-6 mark at home...The club is 32-17 overall at home - the second-best home record in the league - and is batting .261 in 49 games at The Diamond while averaging 4.57 runs per game at home (224R/49G).
