
Yan Gomes Homers, But Fisher Cats Fall to Sea Dogs 6-2

(Manchester, NH)-Anthony Gose, Mark Sobolewski and Callix Crabbe had two hits apiece, and Yan Gomes homered, but the Fisher Cats dropped a 6-2 decision to Portland in the opener of a four-game series on Thursday night before 7,021 at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
Chris Balcom-Miller (2-4) won for the first time for Portland since June 5 at Altoona. He worked 6.2 scoreless innings, allowing seven hits. He issued no walks and struck out five.
Portland scored the game's first run in the top of the second inning. Will Middlebrooks (2-for-4) doubled, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a single by Jon Hee to make it 1-0.
The Sea Dogs (39-58) extended the lead in the top of the third inning. Jeremy Hazelbaker beat out a bunt single and stole second. He moved to third on an infield single by Chih-Hsien Chiang. Middlebrooks doubled for the second consecutive inning driving in a run. Chiang scored on a groundout by Tim Federowicz to make it 3-0.
Chiang and Mitch Dening added solo home runs off losing pitcher Chad Beck (7-4), who worked the first 5.1 innings, allowing nine hits and five runs. Beck struck out six to up the lead to 5-0.
Portland added a run to make it 6-0 on doubles by Federowicz and Ryan Dent in the top of the eighth inning.
In the bottom of the ninth inning for the Fisher Cats (54-43), Moises Sierra walked and Yan Gomes homered off reliever Caleb Clay to prevent the shutout.
Anthony Gose, Mark Sobolewski and Callix Crabbe had two hits each for New Hampshire.
