Reading Fightin Phils News Release

(Reading, PA) -- The ball was flying out of FirstEnergy Stadium on Thursday. Unfortunately for Reading, it was Binghamton doing all of the scoring.

Jordany Valdespin launched two home runs, Matt Den Dekker launched his third home run in two days, and the Binghamton Mets beat the R-Phils 11-1 with the help of a season-high six long balls on Thursday evening at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading, PA.

In their first showdown of the season, Binghamton took advantage of Reading starter Joe Esposito (3-2, 5.10), who allowed five runs on six hits over four innings. Esposito, a native of Mineola, NY, allowed three home runs on the evening, and was saddled with his second loss of the year.

Valdespin, a 2011 Eastern League All-Star, extended his hit-streak to six-straight games, and did so with the help of two home runs. The 23-year-old roped his 12th home run of the season in the third inning off of Esposito, and later ripped a solo home run in the ninth off of Reading reliever Derrick Loop.

A native of the Dominican Republic, Valdespin is now batting .304 with 13 home runs and 42 RBIs on the season. He's ranked by Baseball America as the 25th best prospect in the New York Mets organization.

Allan Dykstra (13), Brahiam Maldonado (17), Dusty Ryan (20), and Den Dekker (5), chipped in with home runs as well. Maldonado, 25, homered for the second-straight day, and is fourth in the Eastern League in home runs. Binghamton (40-59) had 15 hits on the evening -- two short of their season high.

Binghamton starter Collin McHugh (3-2, 4.28) allowed one run on four hits over five innings to earn his third win of the season. McHugh, a native of Covington, GA, won his second-straight start, and was sharp over his five innings of work. The 24-year-old walked one and fanned four batters.

Reliever Jack Egbert, who was added to the Mets roster before the game, tossed four scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn his first save of the season. Egbert allowed just one hit and struck-out two batters.

The two clubs will continue their series on Friday in game two. Reading will send RHP B.J. Rosenberg (3-4, 4.62) to the hill, while the Mets will counter with RHP Tobi Stoner (4-3, 5.24).
