Norfolk Tides News Release
April 27, 2007 - The Richmond Braves plated three runs on three hits in the top of the 11th, knocking off the Tides 4-1 in front of 6,786 fans at Harbor Park Friday night.
The Braves began the decisive rally with a double by Wes Timmons off of Norfolk reliever Francis Beltran (0-2). Gregor Blanco followed by dropping down a sacrifice bunt, but Beltran threw wide of first base, allowing Timmons to score and advancing Blanco to second. Martin Prado followed with an infield single to move Blanco to third, and Doug Clark put the Braves up 3-1 with a sacrifice fly. Bill McCarthy capped the inning with an RBI single to left.
Norfolk starter Tim Kester pitched tremendously but did not earn a decision. Kester yielded a run in the first inning on an RBI single by Yunel Escobar, but settled down immediately, retiring the next 17 batters he faced. Kester allowed three hits and struck out three in 8.0 innings of work, throwing just 79 pitches - 51 for strikes.
Norfolk plated their lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Mike Cervenak reached on an error and scored on an RBI single by Terry Tiffee. Tiffee finished 2-for-4 on the evening, extending his hitting streak to nine games.
The Tides nearly won the game in the bottom of the 9th inning, as Adam Stern led off with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brandon Fahey. J.R. House followed with a fly ball to shallow center field, but Gregor Blanco gunned down Stern at home plate to send the game to extra innings.
Stern finished 3-for-5 for Norfolk, which fell to 1-7 at Harbor Park this season with the loss.
Joe Winkelsas (1-0) picked up the win for the Braves in his Richmond debut, allowing four hits in four shutout innings of relief. Braves starter Anthony Lerew also pitched well, allowing an unearned run in 7.0 innings of work while striking out two.
The Tides and Braves will continue their four-game series Saturday night, as the series shifts to Richmond for two games. Southpaw Garrett Olson (0-2, 6.63) is slated to take the mound for Norfolk against Richmond lefty Macay McBride (1-0, 1.50).
