Ryan Doumit Recalled By Pittsburgh
April 27, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Indians catcher Ryan Doumit (pronounced "DOE-mit") was recalled by Pittsburgh on Thursday morning. Approximately 10 hours after getting the call, Doumit went 2-for-4 with one double and two RBI as the Pirates improved to 6-0 against the Houston Astros this season with a 5-3 win at PNC Park.
At the time of his promotion, Doumit led the International League in batting average (.415), slugging percentage (.717) and RBI (20). The 26-year-old also ranked among league leaders in on-base percentage (.493, 2nd) and runs scored (15, 4th).
"This is a well-deserved promotion because Ryan is an excellent hitter," Indians Manager Trent Jewett says. "He's been a tremendous asset to our team from an offensive standpoint, but I'm most proud of the strides he's made defensively. I've really been impressed with how he's worked behind the plate this year."
Doumit was named the IL's Batter of the Week for the period of April 16-22. He recorded a .423 BA, .692 SLG, two home runs and 11 RBI in seven games during the stretch.
Doumit registered a nine-game hitting streak from April 11-21 (.514 BA, 18-for-35, 11 R, 3 HR, 15 RBI). He batted .500 (13-for-26) on the road and .333 (9-for-27) at home this year. The switch-hitter also hit .444 against left-handed pitchers and .409 vs. right-handed hurlers.
A native of Moses Lake, Wash., Doumit led the Tribe in multi-hit games (7) and multi-RBI contests (7). On April 17, he belted the Tribe's first grand slam since Aug. 28, 2006.
Doumit is in his ninth season with the Pittsburgh organization after being selected by the Pirates in the second round of the 1999 draft. He has played in 140 big league affairs, hitting .236 with 12 HR and 52 RBI.
Doumit was optioned to the Tribe on April 8 when INF Freddy Sanchez finished a Major League rehabilitation assignment.
The Indians, who are 11-7 overall, begin a four-game series at Ottawa on Friday night. The Pirates, who are 10-10, begin a three-game set against Cincinnati on Friday night.
