Indianapolis Indians News Release
OTTAWA, Ontario -- Right fielder Jim Rushford blooped an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to cap a late rally and give Ottawa a dramatic 2-1 come-from-behind win over Indianapolis Friday night at Lynx Stadium.
The Lynx improve to 9-7 overall and 6-1 at home, while the Indians fall to 11-8 overall and 5-2 on the road.
Ottawa scored both of its runs in the ninth. CF Chris Roberson drew a lead-off walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and came plateward on C Jason Jaramillo's single to center. Jaramillo then scored the winning run on Rushford's base knock to left after moving to second on a groundout and third on LF Lou Collier's infield single.
The ninth-inning rally gave Ottawa RHP Yoel Hernandez (1.0 IP) his first win of the year and Indianapolis RHP Kevin Gryboski (0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB) his first loss of the campaign.
Indians RHP John Van Benschoten (7.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 SO), who faced just two batters over the minimum and retired 16 straight from the second through seventh innings, did not figure in the decision.
Lynx RHP Rick Bauer (3.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO), who yielded just one unearned run in the first, also settled for a no-decision.
Indianapolis cracked the scoreboard with a run in its first at-bat. LF Rajai Davis drew a one-out walk, stole the next two bases and came plateward on an Ottawa miscue.
Davis extended his season-best on-base streak to 16 contests with a 1-for-3 effort, while 1B Yurendell de Caster extended his season-best hitting streak to nine tilts with a 2-for-3 performance. Van Benschoten, who led the nation in home runs as a junior at Kent State, also went 2-for-3 on the night.
Jaramillo and Rushford paced Ottawa with two singles and one RBI apiece. Collier (2000-01) and Rushford (2002-03) both played for the Tribe as Milwaukee Brewer farmhands.
The two clubs return to Lynx Stadium on Saturday at 1:05 p.m., for game two of the four-game set. RHP Marty McLeary is scheduled to start for Indianapolis, while LHP J.A. Happ is expected to get the nod for Ottawa.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com as Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley call all the action. The pre-game show begins at 12:45 p.m.
