FORT MILL, S.C. - April 27, 2007 - The Durham Bulls own the early bragging rights in their rivalry with the Charlotte, after defeating the Knights 5-2 before 8,312 at Knights Stadium. The Bulls got on the board early in the 2nd when Elliot Johnson hit a 2-run homer with two outs to give Durham a 3-0 lead.
Charlotte's Wiki Gonzalez continues to have the hot bat for the Knights. After Andy Gonzalez's sacrifice fly scored Ernie Young for the Knights first run, Wiki hit a solo shot in the 3rd to make it 5-2. In his last 5 games, Gonzalez is 7-15 with a .467 BA, HR and 4 RBI.
Knights pitcher Heath Phillips (2-2, 3.41) had his longest outing of the season pitching 8 innings, giving up 11 hits, 4 ER and 8 strikeouts. Jeff Nienmann (1-1, 3.60) got the win for the Bulls.
The series will continue in Durham this weekend. RHP Charlie Haeger (0-3, 6.46) will start for the Knights. RHP Andy Sonnanstine (1-2, 3.13) takes the mound for the Bulls. Game time is 5 p.m.
