Richmond, Barons Slam Smokies 14-3

Birmingham, AL - The Barons rode the hot bat of Josh Richmond and the left arm of Scott Snodgress to a 14-3 win over the Tennessee Smokies in front of 4919 fans at Regions Field.

For the fourth time in the series the Smokies scored first, breaking a scoreless tie in the fourth on a two-out RBI single by Anthony Giansanti.

The Barons were held in check for the first four innings of the game as starterPierce Johnson (0-1, 6.75) surrendered just one hit. However, the Barons would explode for eight runs in the fifth to take an 8-1 lead. The Barons tied the game at 1-1 on an RBI single by Jaimie Pedroza and took a 2-1 lead on a base hit by Micah Johnson.

Johnson was lifted in favor of reliever Ryan Searle who loaded the bases for Josh Richmond after a single by Gordon Beckham and hit-by-pitch against Kevan Smith. Richmond would make him pay with a towering Grand Slam over the home run porch in left field. It was the first Barons Grand Slam since Dan Black hit one against the Smokies in Tennessee on May 7th, 2013 and the first at home since Stefan Gartrell against Jacksonville on June 22nd, 2008 at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.

Incredibly, the first grand slam in six seasons may not have been the best stat of the night as Rangel Ravelo followed Richmond with a solo home run of his own. It marked the second night in a row that Richmond and Ravelo hit back-to-back home runs, a feat never before accomplished in recorded Barons history.

The Barons weren't finished offensively, scoring a run in the sixth on a base hit by Kevan Smith and five more runs in the eighth on an RBI single by Trayce Thompson, a bases-loaded walk to Richmond, a two-run double by Ravelo and an RBI groundout by Chris Curley to take a 14-1 lead. Richmond finished with five RBI on the night while Ravelo finished 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Scott Snodgress (1-2, 7.11) was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst but came through with his best outing of the season, allowing just one run on six hits over 7.0 IP while picking up his first win of the 2014 season. He's now 3-0 with a 2.25 ERA in four starts against the Smokies in his career.

With the win, the Barons improved to 10-9 while the Smokies fell to 9-10. The Barons will look to win their third series in a row tomorrow afternoon as RHP Terry Doyle (2-1, 3.12) takes the hill against RHP Corey Black (0-1, 4.09). Firstpitch is scheduled for a 11:00 AM CDT.
