Mississippi Braves News Release
Montgomery, AL - Behind great days at the plate for Elmer Reyes and Braeden Schlehuber, the Mississippi Braves snapped their five-game losing streak with a 6-2 win against the Montgomery Biscuits on Tuesday morning.
Reyes had four hits on the day and reached five times, including a first-inning RBI single to score Cedric Hunter and give the Braves (7-12) a 1-0 lead.
The Biscuits (12-7) tied the game in the fourth against Mississippi starter Williams Perez, Ryan Brett and Curt Casali singled to put runners at first and third. Cameron Seitzer hit a sacrifice fly to shallow right-center, making it 1-1.
In the fifth, the Braves took a lead they would never relinquish. Emerson Landoni drew a leadoff walk and stole second against Biscuits pitcher Michael Colla. With two outs, Reyes came through for his third knock of the day, an RBI single to center to make it 2-1.
Colla (1-2) went five innings in the loss, allowing two earned runs on five hits, striking out five and walking three.
In the fifth, Braeden Schlehuber smacked a two-run home run, his first of the year, off reliever Matt Lollis to make it 4-1 Mississippi. He finished with three hits in his first game since being hit in the helmet by a pitch on Friday.
The Biscuits got a run back in the sixth. Joey Rickard singled to lead off, moving to second on a Brett groundout. Casali came through with two outs, lining a base hit to right to pull to 4-2. That was the last run the Biscuits mustered.
Perez (2-1) picked up the win, allowing just two earned runs on six hits while striking out five and walking one. His season ERA stands at a paltry 1.77 through four starts. Both of his wins have come in early-morning school day games this year.
Late in the game, Kyle Kubitza provided insurance, stroking an RBI double in the eighth and an RBI triple in the ninth to extend the lead to 6-2. That was plenty for relievers John Cornely, James Hoyt and Shae Simmons to close it out with a scoreless inning each.
Now the Braves have more than 24 hours off before wrapping up the five-game series with the Biscuits on Wednesday at 7:05 PM CT from Riverwalk Stadium. Right-hander JR Graham (0-1, 0.00) takes the hill against Biscuits left-hander Grayson Garvin (0-1, 1.00).
Listen live to Kyle Tait on the call beginning at 6:30 PM CT on 103.9 WYAB or online at MississippiBraves.com and TuneIn Radio.
