Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC - The New York Yankees announced Thursday that Charleston RiverDogs' relievers Josh Smith and T.J. Beam have been promoted to high A Tampa. Coming to Charleston in their place are right-handers Elvys Quezada and Brandon Harmsen, both of whom were transferred from Tampa.

Beam was chosen for the South Atlantic League Southern Division All-Star team by RiverDogs and Southern Division manager Bill Mosiello after posting a 2.01 ERA in 24 games for the RiverDogs in the first half. Because of his promotion, Beam will withdraw from the All-Star contest. Taking his place on the Southern Division roster is another member of Charleston's pitching staff, Eric Hacker. The right-hander has gone 3-2 with a 1.91 ERA in eight starts for the RiverDogs since joining the team on May 6.

"He's been a tremendous addition to our club and he certainly deserves this honor," RiverDogs and Southern Division manager Bill Mosiello said.

Hacker joins outfielder Tim Battle, infielders Ben Jones and Cody Ehlers, and closer Mike Martinez in addition to Mosiello and pitching coach Steve Renko as representatives of the RiverDogs for the midsummer classic in Augusta on June 28. Starting pitcher Philip Hughes was also tabbed as a Southern Division All-Star but withdrew from the contest due to mild inflammation in his shoulder.

Smith went 1-0 with a 2.20 ERA in 22 games for the RiverDogs, striking out 34 in 32.2 innings. Beam and Smith combined to allow only 18 earned runs in 77.1 innings as set-up men for the closer Martinez, who is 21-21 in save opportunities and leads the league in saves.

"They were very instrumental in what we were able to accomplish in the first half and greatly contributed to the year that Martinez has had," Mosiello said of Beam and Smith. "The promotions were definitely well deserved and I wish them the best of luck."

Quezada comes to the RiverDogs after going 3-0 with a 6.52 ERA in 15 games, all of them in relief, for high A Tampa this season. The 15th-round pick in 2003 spent last season with Mosiello in Battle Creek (MI), going 2-6 with a 4.11 ERA in 15 starts.

Harmsen was picked in the sixth round by the Yankees in 2002 and also spent 2004 with Battle Creek, finishing with a record of 10-3 and a 3.53 ERA in 35 games, 16 of them starts. The right-hander went 1-8 with a 6.26 ERA in 19 contests, six of them starts, for Tampa this season.

After finishing a three-contest set in Savannah Thursday, the RiverDogs return to Riley Park on Friday, June 24, to open a three-game series with the Augusta GreenJackets. Tickets for the three-game series can be purchased by visiting the RiverDogs website at www.riverdogs.com or by calling the box office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647).
