Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

Right-handed pitcher Drew Carpenter joined the Albuquerque Isotopes this morning, and in a corresponding move, right-hander Sam Demel was placed on the disabled list with right elbow discomfort.

Carpenter tossed four innings for the Rookie-level Arizona League Dodgers on Friday, June 20. He went four innings allowing three runs on seven hits. He spent the 2013 season in the Minor League system of the Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Angels and Oakland A's. During that time, he appeared in a combined 15 games in the Pacific Coast League between Colorado Springs and Iowa. In nine Minor League seasons, Carpenter is 63-49 with a 3.72 ERA. He claims 688 strikeouts against only 271 walks in 913.0 innings pitched. Carpenter has also pitched in parts of five seasons in the Major Leagues with the Philadelphia Phillies, Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres.

Demel started the game on Friday, June 20, at Omaha that was eventually rained out but departed early due to discomfort in his right elbow. The 28-year-old right-hander began the season as Albuquerque's closer and led the PCL with five saves early on before his move to the starting rotation. In 21 appearances and six starts this season, Demel is 1-2 with a 6.41 ERA. He's struck out 43 and walked only 18 in 46.1 innings pitched.

The Isotopes and Iowa Cubs will play game two of a four-game series today at 12:05 p.m. MT. Right-hander Red Patterson (3-6, 4.71 ERA) will take the hill for Albuquerque, while Iowa will go with lefty Eric Jokisch (5-7, 3.89 ERA).
