Sacramento Rallies Past Zephyrs in Ninth

The Sacramento River Cats rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat the New Orleans Zephyrs, 4-3 on Sunday afternoon.

New Orleans led 3-1 going to the ninth, but the River Cats rallied against Z's closer Chaz Roe. Ryan Lipkin laced a single to right leading off, and Jake Elmore laid down a bunt single. A one-out fielding error by Donovan Solano loaded the bases, and Nate Freiman's single through the hole at short tied the game at 3-3.

Nick Buss then singled past a diving Juan Diaz at shortstop to drive in the go-ahead run. Jeremy McBryde worked around a one-out walk in the bottom of the ninth to nail down his seventh save and give Sacramento its league-leading fourth victory this season when trailing after eight innings.

Eric O'Flaherty, on a rehab assignment from the Oakland Athletics, started the game for Sacramento and tossed two scoreless innings.

Scheduled starter Zach Neal took over in the third, and with one out, Juan Diaz launched his sixth home run of the season to put the Zephyrs on top. The Z's added three more singles in the inning, capped by a two-run single up the middle by Canha to give New Orleans a 2-0 advantage.

Zephyrs starter Adam Conley spent six weeks on the disabled list with a left elbow strain, but showed little effects of the injury by blanking the River Cats into the sixth inning. He struck out two and walked two and allowed just one runner to reach second base until Sacramento had two on with two outs in the sixth.

Dan Jennings entered for his first appearance since being optioned from the Marlins, and needed just three pitches to strike out Shane Peterson. Jennings worked around a pair of singles in the seventh, and got two quick outs in the eighth before an error by third baseman Zack Cox allowed the inning to continue.

Jennings walked Peterson, and Arquimedes Caminero allowed a single to Jose Martinez to load the bases and a walk to Nick Buss to force in the River Cats' first run before fanning Colin Walsh.

In the bottom of the inning, Canha doubled with two outs and scored on a single up the middle by Brantly to provide the Zephyrs with a short-lived 3-1 cushion.

Former Zephyr Philip Humber (2-4) was credited with the win, while Roe (3-3) suffered his second blown save and took the loss.

The Zephyrs and River Cats continue the series on Monday at 7 p.m.active.
