Reno Aces News Release
RENO, Nev.- Nick Ahmed delivered newcomer Argenis Diaz with a base-hit in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Aces a 6-5 win over Colorado Springs Saturday night at Aces Ballpark. It's the second game-winning hit for Ahmed this season, and the sixth walk-off victory for Reno.
The line-shot to the wall in left-center came on a 1-1 pitch with two outs off Sky Sox reliever Leuris Gomez. The win kept the Aces perfect in extra innings, who now own a 4-0 mark when playing past nine.
The game went back-and-forth early as Colorado Springs took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Drew Garcia ripped a double down the left-field line, plating Tim Wheeler. A couple batters later, pitcher Pedro Hernandez legged out an infield single, scoring Garcia to give the Sky Sox a 2-0 advantage.
The Aces battled back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Bobby Wilson hit a blooper down the left-field line to score Andy Marte from second.
Ben Paulsen greeted Lucas Harrell with a solo homer to lead off the top of the third. Angelys Nina made it back-to-back homers when he followed with his own solo shot to right field. Harrell tossed six innings for Reno, the first six-inning start for the Aces since Andrew Chafin threw six frames in Memphis on June 13.
The speedy Tony Campana came through with a clutch knock for the Aces in the fourth. Diaz cracked a one-out single up the middle and moved to third on Harrell's flare to right. With two outs, Ahmed drew a walk to load the bases for Campana. On a 1-2 pitch from Hernandez, Campana laced a bases-clearing triple down the right-field line to even the game at 4-4.
Both pitchers threw scoreless fifth innings, then allowed a run in the sixth. The Sky Sox got a lead-off double from Paul Janish who later came around to score when Michael Ramirez lifted a sacrifice fly to center.
In Reno's half of the inning, Wilson launched a solo blast to deep left-field. His second homer of the season knotted the game at 5-5. Wilson finished the game 2-for-5 with a two runs scored and a pair of RBIs.
From there, the bullpen's for each team took over. Kevin Munson, Jake Barrett, Will Harris and Jess Todd combined for six scoreless innings. It paved the way for the offense which finally broke through in the 12th.
Diaz was signed to a minor-league free agent contract earlier in the day and was 3-for-5 with two runs scored in his Aces debut.
The series continues Sunday as right-hander Trevor Cahill (0-1, 9.00) makes his second start for the Aces. Right-hander Brett Tomko (0-0, 5.40) gets the ball for the Sky Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PST.
