Sacramento River Cats News Release
NEW ORLEANS, La. - Trailing the New Orleans Zephyrs 3-1 in the top of the ninth inning, the River Cats scored three times and ultimately won by a score of 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at Zephyr Field.
Eric O'Flaherty-making his four rehab appearance for the River Cats-got his first start of the season, tossing two scoreless innings before starting pitcher Zach Neal came on in the third. Neal allowed a two-run home run in the bottom of the third, giving New Orleans a 2-0 lead. Neither team scored until the top of the eighth when the River Cats spoiled the shutout on a Nick Buss bases-loaded walk. The Zephyrs got the run back in the bottom of the eighth on a Rob Brantly run-scoring single.
Trailing 3-1 to begin the ninth inning, the River Cats opened the frame with back-to-back singles from Ryan Lipkin and Jake Elmore. After Tyler Ladendorf flew out to Matt Angle, Josh Reddick reached on a fielding error from second baseman Donovan Solano, loading the bases for Nate Freiman. The six-foot, eight-inch first baseman came through in the clutch, singling through the hole at shortstop, scoring Lipkin and Elmore to tie the game at three. After a Shane Peterson groundout, Jose Martinez drew a walk to load the bases for Buss, who drove in his second run of the game, giving Sacramento the 4-3 win.
Freiman finished 1-for-3 with a run, two RBI, and two walks, and is now 8-for-17 (.471) with 25 RBI with the bases loaded this season. Buss went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a walk, while Martinez finished 3-for-4 with a walk of his own. Reddick-making his fourth rehab start with the River Cats-went 1-for-5 with a run scored.
O'Flaherty needed only 20 pitches-13 strikes-to get through two innings in a no-decision. Neal gave up six hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts in five innings. Philip Humber recorded his second win after giving up two hits and one earned runs with two strikeouts. McBryde nabbed his seventh save with a scoreless ninth inning.
The loss was charged to closer Chaz Roe, who gave up three runs-one earned-on four hits and a walk. Starter Adam Conley took a no-decision, giving up four hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Mark Canha paced the Zephyrs offensively, going 3-for-4 with a run, an RBI, and a steal.
Sacramento will look to maintain their momentum on Monday evening at Zephyr Field when Arnold Leon (7-2, 4.91 ERA) takes on New Orleans righty Elih Villanueva (8-3, 2.85 ERA) at 5 p.m.
The River Cats return home on Thursday, June 26, for #SacLovesSports night at Raley Field as they take on the Las Vegas 51s at 7:05 p.m. in a game that will be broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network.
