Reyes Nearly No-Hits Binghamton, B-Mets Fall 6-2

Recent trade acquisition Jo-Jo Reyes baffled the B-Mets hitters for eight innings and allowed just one hit, leading New Hampshire past Binghamton 6-2 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium Friday night. Reyes carried a no-hitter into the eighth, before Jon Malo broke the hitless stretch with a one-out double.

Binghamton (49-44) was in a hole from the get go with left-hander Robert Carson making his Double-A debut. Darin Mastroianni tripled to right leading off the Fisher Cats first inning. Two pitches later, he scored on a Mike Nickeas passed ball. Adeiny Hechavarria was the second straight to reach, courtesy of a double to right-center. He scored with two outs on an Adam Loewen RBI single to right-center, making it 2-0 Fisher Cats.

New Hampshire (56-37) extended its lead to three in the second. Mastroianni singled to center with two outs and promptly stole second, his Eastern League-leading 34th swipe. Hechavarria followed with a rope to left-center off Carson, plating Mastroianni.

Eric Thames added a fourth run to the Fisher Cats' lead in the third with his 17th homer of the season, a solo blast to right.

Carson exited to the loss after four innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out four.

Eric Niesen followed and worked the fifth inning in scoreless fashion before running into trouble in the sixth. The southpaw allowed a single and a pair of walks leading to his exit with the bases loaded and one out. Eddie Kunz followed and limited the damage to just a run, getting the next two hitters to fly out. Hechavarria drove in the run with a sacrifice fly to left, advancing New Hampshire's lead to 5-0.

The Fisher Cats final run came in seventh as Kunz issued a two-out walk to Loewen starting a rally. David Cooper and Jonathan Diaz followed with singles, pushing Loewen across to extend the lead to 6-0.

Reyes departed to the win after the eighth. The southpaw allowed just one hit, walked two and struck out six to notch his first win since being traded from Atlanta Wednesday.

The B-Mets did not go quietly in the ninth, plating two runs to avoid the shutout. Mike Nickeas drove in a run with a groundout to first after Josh Satin reached on a fielder's choice and Marshall Hubbard doubled. Raul Reyes rounded out the scoring with a bloop single to center, scoring Hubbard. Hubbard's double pushed his season-long hitting streak to nine games.

The contest was delayed 1 hour and 13 minutes at the outset due to rain.

Game three of the four-game set is slated for Saturday at 7:05 PM. The pitching matchup features a pair of Eastern League All-Stars as RHP Josh Stinson (6-1, 3.31) gets the call for the B-Mets against RHP Kyle Drabek (9-8, 3.03) of the Fisher Cats. The radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:50 PM with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
