York Revolution News Release
The largest crowd of the season witnessed one of the top come-from-behind efforts of the season as the York Revolution erased a five-run deficit, stealing an 8-7 victory from the Bridgeport Bluefish in front of 6,966 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Monday night. The Revs have won three consecutive games, building a season-high three-game lead for first place. The series continues on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Down 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Jose Herrera kicked off the comeback with a leadoff homerun to left-center. Two batters later, James Shanks belted a missile over the fence in left-center for a two-run shot, bringing the Revs within two runs.
York followed the three-run seventh with an even bigger eighth, plating four runs to complete the comeback. Ramon Castro drew a leadoff walk and Herrera smacked a single to left to get the rally started. Chris Nowak then reached on a bloop ground rule double to right, scoring Castro to cut the deficit to one and landing the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position with no outs. Shanks then greeted reliever Chris Rivera with a two-run single to left-center giving York the lead, and Scott Grimes later drove in Vince Harrison with a sacrifice fly to right for an important insurance run, as the Revs stormed in front, 8-6.
Andres Perez brought the Bluefish within one on an RBI groundout in the top of the ninth, but Michael Nix recorded his 15th save retiring Luis Lopez on a line drive to center with the tying run at third.
Bridgeport built an early lead and appeared to be in control behind starter Paul Oseguera, who retired 13 of 14 batters heading into the seventh inning.
The Bluefish struck first with a sac fly from Luis Rodriguez in the top of the second to plate the game's first run.
York tied the contest at 1-1 when Shanks stole home on a double-steal with two outs in the bottom of the second.
Wes Bankston crushed a three-run homer to dead center in the third to lift the 'Fish on top, 4-1. Adam Greenberg then tripled in the fifth and scored on a wild pitch, and Rodriguez smashed a homerun just right of the batter's eye in the seventh for a solo homerun, building a 6-1 lead.
Sean Stidfole (4-4) earned the win out of the Revs bullpen with a scoreless eighth, stranding runners at second and third to keep the Revs within striking distance.
Former Revs righty Julio Manon (0-3) took the loss in relief.
York starter Corey Thurman took a no-decision, charged with five runs in five innings. It was just the third time in 21 starts this season that Thurman allowed more than three earned runs, and the first time in his last nine starts.
Notes: The five-run deficit matches the largest deficit overcome to win a game this season, with the Revs having now done it three times. It was York's 26th comeback win, and their 10th of which has come in the seventh inning or later. The Revs now lead the league with eight wins when trailing after six innings, and six when down after seven innings. The crowd of 6,966 was the largest of the season and sixth largest in stadium history. The Revs have drawn over 4,000 fans in five consecutive home games. York now leads Bridgeport by two games and Southern Maryland by four games for any potential wild card playoff berths. The Revs improve to 14 games over .500 overall for the season, matching a club-record. Thurman's first run allowed in the second inning snapped a 19.2-inning scoreless streak, the third longest in team history. It was his first run allowed in the month of August. The Revs are now 9-4 against Bridgeport on the season and have won eight of the last nine meetings. York's Jack Spradlin (0-2, 5.74) faces Bridgeport's Raymar Diaz (6-0, 4.78) in game two of the series on Tuesday night. It is a Fill Your Tummy Tuesday at Sovereign Bank Stadium. Tickets are available at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
