York Revolution News Release

In a matchup of the top two run-scoring teams in the league, and two of the top three pitching staffs in terms of team ERA, it was the offense that ruled the day, almost exclusively in the first inning, as the York Revolution fell in their series opener against the Long Island Ducks 10-8 in front of 5,546 fans at Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip, NY on Tuesday night. The Revs slip to two games behind Lancaster for first place with 12 remaining in the season's first half.

Fresh off the bus, the Revs offense opened the road series with a bang, tying a club record by scoring five times in the first inning. Ramon Castro knocked in the first run on a double to right-center, with a second run crossing on an error by right fielder Matt Esquivel on the play. James Shanks ripped an RBI double down the left field line for the Revs' third run, and Chris Nowak made it a 5-0 lead on a two-run homer to left, his third since joining the team.

While the Revs enjoyed their outburst, it wasn't nearly what the Ducks had in store, as the hosts responded with nine in their half of the inning, turning York's five-run lead into a four-run deficit.

The first nine batters all reached and scored in the biggest first inning allowed by the Revs in club history. Kennard Jones led off with a triple to right-center, and scored when Ray Navarrete singled to left. Javier Colina then reached on an error, and Revs starter Shaun Garceau walked the next three, forcing in two more runs before being lifted.

Matt DeSalvo, who threw 126 pitches in six innings in a win on Sunday, entered in relief and was greeted with a grand slam to left-center by J.R. House, his third slam of the season. Navarrete later drove in two more on a single to left, with the Ducks taking a 9-5 lead at the end of an inning in stunning fashion.

DeSalvo allowed nothing else, however, totaling a Revs' season-high four innings in relief and striking out six. He retired 11 of the last 12 he faced, and threw 72 pitches, absorbing much of the workload for the rest of the bullpen.

Long Island received similar contributions from their relievers, as both offenses were held in check after the enormous start.

Lefty Dave Williams made his Ducks debut with a scoreless second, and former York hurler Shane Youman followed with four scoreless innings, allowing just three singles, working through the sixth.

Kraig Binick became the first batter to reach scoring position after the first inning with his leadoff double in the bottom of the sixth, also the first hit allowed by Revs pitching since the first. Binick scored on Navarrete's fourth RBI of the night and third hit, a single to left, increasing Long Island's lead to 10-5.

Val Majewski earned that run back for the Revs with a line drive homerun to right field in the top of the seventh, his team-best tenth on the season, and sixth in his last 12 games.

Salvador Paniagua crushed his fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot to deep left in the top of the ninth cutting the deficit to two, but Ducks closer Bubbie Buzachero retired the next three in a non-save situation to finish the game.

Youman (3-0) earned the win, and has now worked 16.1 scoreless innings to begin his season.

Garceau (1-5) suffered the loss in the first game in Revs history in which the starting pitcher did not record an out. Coming off a start in which he fired six shutout innings, he was charged with six of the first inning runs, five of which were earned.

Notes: The Revs out-hit Long Island 13-8, marking the ninth consecutive game in which York reached double figures in hits, a new club record. Every York starter had a hit for the third time in the last five games, and in those five games, 43 of 45 combined starters have hit safely. With three homeruns, the Revs have connected on 21 homers in their last 12 games, including multiple long balls in four straight. The series marks the Revs' first visit of the season to Long Island, as they have now played at least one game in every ballpark in the league this season. Ducks starter Ruddy Lugo lasted only one inning, as neither starter pitched into the second. It was York's first five-run first inning since July 19, 2008, also at Long Island. The nine runs scored by Long Island in the first tied the fourth most allowed by Revs pitching in any inning in franchise history. York has five players with hitting streaks of nine consecutive games or longer. Jose Herrera's hitting streak reached 14. Eric Eymann extended his streak to 13 games with a single in his last at-bat leading off the ninth. Majewski extended his streak to 10 games while Shanks and Vince Harrison both pushed theirs to nine games. Revs' righty John VanBenschoten (2-1, 3.38) faces Long Island's Mike Loree (8-1, 1.99) in the middle game of the series on Wednesday evening at 6:35 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, Shoutcast.com (WPDC), and YorkRevsTV.com beginning at 6 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
