Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

Bridgeport, CT-A two-run ninth-inning single by catcher Christian Lopez broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Blue Crabs a 3-1 win over the Bridgeport Bluefish on Tuesday night at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, CT. Southern Maryland upped its road record to 8-14 in the process.

The Blue Crabs scored first in the first on a RBI single by shortstop Yunesky Sanchez to give Southern Maryland a 1-0 lead. From there it was a pitcher's duel between the starters and Southern Maryland Nick Green and Bridgeport's Matt Pike put on a clinic. Green, for the fourth consecutive start, went seven shutout innings while allowing four hits and striking out six without issuing a walk. Pike also went seven innings, but allowed an earned run on six hits. Like Green, Pike walked none and struck out six.

The game stayed in Southern Maryland's favor until the eighth when the Bluefish loaded the bases with one-out and got a sac-fly from third-baseman Luis Lopez to tie the game. Reliever Steve Palazzolo would get a fly out from first baseman Wes Bankston to end the inning and leave the game tied.

In the ninth, the Blue Crabs got leadoff singles from leftfielder Casey Benjamin and Sanchez before a walk to designated hitter Brian Barton loaded the bases with no one out. Following a pop-out from right fielder Ben Harrison, Lopez came through with his heroics. Closer Jim Ed Warden (15) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to get the save and finish Bridgeport.

Lopez led the way offensively for the Blue Crabs, going 3-4 with a double and two RBI, while Sanchez went 3-4 with a double, RBI and run scored to aid the cause. Third-baseman Brandon Pinckney also chipped in with a 2-4 effort with a double and run scored. No one for the Bluefish had more than one hit.

Palazzolo (5-1) got the win despite allowing the tying run in the eighth, while reliever Antonio Alfonseca (2-2) took the loss.

The Blue Crabs will take on the Bluefish in game two of their three-game series on Wednesday at 7:05. The Blue Crabs will send righty Michael Schlact (2-0, 3.97 ERA) to the hill against southpaw Paul Oseguera (4-1, 2.39 ERA) of the Bluefish. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
