York Revolution News Release

The York Revolution fell back to the .500 mark at 8-8, with a 4-3 loss to the Long Island Ducks on Wednesday. The game marked the second of 11 straight contests played by the Revolution at Campbell's Field in Camden, NJ. York and Long Island split the two-game series, winning a game each, and will meet 16 more times during the regular season.

Long Island got on the board quickly in the top of the first for the second straight day. Dave Gil, who was coming off five shutout innings at Lancaster in his first start of the season, was greeted by a double off the bat of Ray Navarette, a bunt single by Kevin Haverbusch, an RBI single to right by Pete Rose, Jr., and another single to right by Carl Everett. The Ducks' first four batters all reached via a base-hit. Gil finally recorded an out with a called third strike on Jorge Piedra, but the Ducks made it 2-0 with an RBI bloop single to right by Damian Rolls. Gil escaped further harm by rolling a 4-6-3 double play ball to end the inning.

Long Island starter John Reidling, who had taken no-hitters into the sixth inning in his previous two starts, opened by retiring the first five hitters he faced, including three ground-outs in the first inning.

The Revolution got on the board in the third. Luis Taveras led off with a single to center, and Kazunori Tanaka followed with a walk. Peter Bergeron sacrificed both into scoring position with a bunt, and Travis Hake drove in Taveras with an RBI ground-out to short, to make it a 2-1 game.

York had another chance to score in the bottom of the fourth. Vic Gutierrez walked with one out, and former big-league outfielder Danny Bautista, playing in his first game with the Revs, singled to right. Rayner Bautista followed with an infield single, but with the bases loaded, Reidling retired Taveras on a line-out to second, and Tanaka on a line-out to left, ending the threat

Meanwhile, Gil was settling into a rhythm, allowing only two hits and a walk from the second through the fifth innings. He struck out the side in the fourth, and his first five strikeouts (seven total) came on called third strikes.

Long Island added to its lead with two runs in the sixth. Piedra led off with a walk, Rolls singled to right, Ron Acuna sacrificed both into scoring position with a bunt, and Derek Wathan drove in Piedra with a sac-fly line-out to left. Jared Price then followed with a hard line drive to left that appeared to be caught by Tanaka, but it popped out of his glove, allowing Rolls to score on the error, making the score 4-1 Ducks.

Gil finished his outing after six innings, allowing four runs (three earned), eight hits, three walks, and striking out seven.

Charlie Hesseltine relieved Gil in the seventh, and worked three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. The only other base runner against Hesseltine reached on an error, and he struck out one batter.

York closed to within 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh. Tanaka worked a walk with one out, advanced to second on Bergeron's ground out, and came around to score on a two-out RBI single to right by Hake. The RBI was the second of the game for Hake.

Reidling was relieved after seven innings, allowing two earned runs, five hits, two walks, and four strikeouts.

Right-hander Todd Erdos fired a scoreless eighth inning for Long Island, and lefty Kevin Tolar came on in the ninth to face left-hand hitters Tanaka and Bergeron. York manager Chris Hoiles elected to pinch-hit right-hander Willie Matos for Tanaka, and Matos drove a breaking ball deep over the left-field fence for his first homer of the year, tenth of his career, and the first in Revs history by a pinch-hitter, to make the score 4-3. Bergeron then struck out swinging, and with one out, Long Island manager Dave LaPoint summoned two-time National League All-Star closer Danny Graves to close things out. Graves retired Hake on a ground-out to second, and Matt Dryer on a called third strike to end the game.

Reidling (2-0) picked up the win for the Ducks, while Gil (0-1) absorbed the loss. The save for Graves was his second. The game was played in two hours and 35 minutes in front of a sparse crowd for the Revolution neutral-site "home" game.

Danny Bautista had the lone multi-hit game for York, going 2-4 in his Revs debut. York scored its three runs on six hits, committed two errors, and left nine runners on base.

Navarette was 2-4 with a double, triple, and a run scored for Long Island. Rose, Jr. was 2-5 with an RBI, going 6-10 in the two-game series. Rolls also had a multi-hit game for the Ducks, going 2-4 with a run and an RBI. Long Island plated its four runs on nine hits, did not commit an error, and stranded eight base runners.

The Revolution return to action tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. as the road team when they take on the Camden Riversharks at Campbell's Field. Lefty Chris Steinborn takes the mound for the Revs, and fans in York can catch all the action LIVE beginning at 6:05 p.m. on NEWSRADIO 910 WSBA or ONLINE at www.yorkrevolution.com.

Notes: York is now 1-8 when being out-hit by the opponent this season, and 2-7 when the opponent scores the first run of the game. Long Island scored three runs on seven hits in the first inning of the two games in the series.
