Bears take game, series with 4-0 win

NEWARK, NJ - May 23, 2007 - Starting pitcher Matt Sweeney (3-1) went six and two-thirds, surrendering just four hits and striking out six, in leading the Newark Bears to a 4-0 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Bears have won three of their last four games and improved their record to 10-7.

The Bears got on the board in the top of third inning when third baseman Corey Smith doubled to left-field scoring designated hitter Javier Colina. Two batters later, right-fielder Jose Herrera homered to right-field to give the Bears a 3-0 advantage. In the fourth inning, shortstop Ramon Castro doubled to left-field to plate second baseman Josh Arteaga, giving Newark the 4-0 lead.

Offensively, the Bears collected 14 hits, led by Herrera who had three with two RBI and a run scored. Smith added two doubles, with an RBI and run scored, while Colina, Castro, and first baseman Victor Rodriguez also had two hits apiece.

For the Barnstormers, designated hitter Dominick Ambrosini singled twice for two of the teams' four hits. Third baseman Steve Van Note and second baseman Bo Hart each doubled.

Right-handed starter Scott Sobkowiak (0-2) took the loss for the Barnstormers, allowing four runs on ten hits in four and one-third innings of work.

J.J Trujillo struck out two batters in two and one-third innings of no-hit ball to earn his first save of the season

The Bears will welcome the Barnstormers to Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium for the second half of the home and home series on Thursday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM. Delvis Pacheco (0-0) will make his first start for the Bears against the Barnstormers' Gustavo Martinez (0-1).
