Lancaster Stormers News Release
Matt Sweeney and JJ Trujillo combined to blank Lancaster on four hits in Wednesday's day game as the Newark Bears shut down the Barnstormers, 4-0, in front of 5,280 at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Sweeney (3-1) allowed the four hits, two off the bat of newcomer Dominick Ambrosini, in 6 2/3 innings while walking none and striking out six. Trujillo entered with two outs in the seventh and retired seven of eight batters, yielding only a two-out walk to Chris Van Rossum in the eighth, in earning his first save of the season.
The Bears reached Scott Sobkowiak (0-2) for three runs in the top of the third inning. Javier Colina led off with a single to left. After Ramon Castro flied to right on a hit-and-run, Colina stole second and scored on a double over the head of Quincy Foster in left for a 1-0 lead. One out later, Jose Herrera rode a 3-2 pitch over the picnic tents as Newark went up, 3-0.
Castro drove the fourth run across with a double to left center in the fourth inning. The Bears attack, which produced 39 hits in the series, was finally shut off by Eric Ackerman, who fired 4 2/3 shutout innings of relief.
Lancaster had its best chance to score in the fifth. Ambrosini led off with a ground single into right field, and one out later, Steve Van Note thundered a double off the wall in center. The rally died there.
Bo Hart cracked a liner barely foul into the left field corner before eventually fouling out to the catcher. Jeremy Dietrick struck out as Sweeney kept the shutout intact.
Lancaster advanced runners into scoring position in two other innings. Hart doubled to right center with one out in the third and never moved. Ambrosini singled in the seventh. Sweeney's final two pitches were wild high and inside. The first was a wild pitch that took Ambrosini to second and the next drilled Van Note. Bo Hart grounded into a force play against Trujillo to end the inning.
NOTES: Lancaster has dropped ten of its last 12 games...Wednesday afternoon's loss was the second shutout absorbed by the Barnstormers during the slide...Chris Van Rossum kept his on-base streak alive at 15 with a walk in the eighth inning...The series shifts to Newark where Gustavo Martinez (0-1) will square off against Delvis Pacheco (0-0) Thursday at 5:05.
