Bears Lose To Barnstormers 3-2

NEWARK, NJ - May 22, 2007 - Newark Bears third baseman Corey Smith tripled to lead off the top of the eighth inning, however Lancaster Barnstormers closer James Lira recorded three straight groundouts to strand Smith at third and the Bears fell to the Barnstormers 3-2 Tuesday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Lancaster scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning when catcher Lance Burkhart hit a two-out two-run double to left field scoring center-fielder Jutt Hileman and first baseman and former Bear Jeremy Todd.

The Bears tied the game at two in the top of the second inning when catcher John Pachot singled to score right-fielder Jose Herrera who doubled to reach base. After designated hitter Joey Gomes singled to move Pachot to second base, left-fielder Jack Headley singled to score Pachot to tie the game.

The score remained 2-2 until the bottom of the fifth inning when Hileman hit an RBI single scoring left-fielder Quincy Foster giving the Barnstormers a 3-2 lead.

Bears starter Gary Knotts (1-1) took the loss despite striking out five batters in six innings and allowing only three runs on six hits. Barnstormers starter Josh Stevens (2-1) earned the victory pitching seven innings surrendering two runs on eight hits. Lira earned a six-out save for his second of the season.

The Bears and Barnstormers will play the rubber match of the three-game series Wednesday morning in Lancaster with first pitch scheduled for 11:05 AM. Matt Sweeney (2-1) will take the mound for the Bears against Scott Sobkowiak (0-1) for the Barnstormers.
