September 4, 2007 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution suffered a heartbreaking defeat, losing 10-5 to the Newark Bears in front of 3,007 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium Tuesday night. The loss is the 11th in the last 17 games for the Revolution, who fall 4.5 games back in the south division at 27-23 with just 12 games to play. Newark is now 26-25 in the second half.
The Revs used a five-run second to build an early lead. Justin Singleton drove the first one home on an RBI groundout, and Luis Cotto made it 2-0 with an RBI single to left-center. Keoni DeRenne capped the outburst with a three-run homer over the Arch Nemesis in left.
Bryan Edwards carried the 5-0 lead into the seventh but then ran into trouble, as the Bears evened the score with a five-run frame. John Pachot had an RBI double in the inning, and Ramon Castro drove in another with a single. Pat Peavey's two-run double off the wall in left knocked Edwards out of the game, and Victor Rodriguez finished off the inning with an RBI single to left.
The Bears got five more runs in the ninth inning. Rodriguez ripped an RBI single to left, Corey Smith pounded a run-scoring double to left, Jose Herrera drove in another on a base-hit to right, and two more came across on an error.
Jeremy Hill (2-0) picked up the win for Newark, hurling two shutout innings. Bears starter Dusty Bergman worked seven innings, allowing five unearned runs. He allowed just one hit after the third inning.
Jason Olson (6-3) took the loss for York, allowing three earned runs in 1.2 innings. Edwards allowed five earned runs on nine hits in 6.2 innings. Byron Batson was the third pitcher used by York, allowing two runs (one earned) in two-thirds of an inning.
Luis Cotto reached base all four times for the Revs, going 2-for-2 with a run, RBI, walk, and hit-by-pitch. He has been on base eight out of nine times the last two games.
Notes: The five-run lead ties the largest surrendered to lose a game (Opening Night at Bridgeport)... the Revs are now 2-11 against the Bears, including 1-6 at Sovereign Bank Stadium... the series resumes Wednesday night at 7:05, with LHP Pete Hartmann (0-1, 7.30) making the start for York, opposed by RHP Mark Woodyard, making his first start for Newark... the first-ever aerial photo of Sovereign Bank Stadium will be taken as part of the Break the Bank Challenge... fans are encouraged to pack the park, and all will receive the once-in-a-lifetime 11" x 17" copy of the photograph upon leaving the ballpark.
