Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
August 6, 2006 - Jordan Renz hit two home runs and finished the day 3 for 4 with 4 RBI as the Kernels came up short in a 7-5 loss to Lansing in front of 3,377 fans on a KDAT Sunday Family Fun Day at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
With Larry Infante and Hainley Statia on in the first, Renz launched his 19th home run of the season over the Randy Kuehl Honfidence Pavilion to give the Kernels an early 3-0 lead.
The Lugnuts scored a run in the second and three runs in the fourth off starter Andy Hill to take a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth. Renz pulled a pitch from Lansing reliever Jordan Timm that landed in the middle tier of seats, just inside the foul pole on the Pavilion to tie the score.
The score remained tied until the top of the seventh as with a runner on third, Brok Butcher hit Luke Hetherington on an 0-2 pitch to put runners on the corners. The next batter, Brian Pettway, smacked a towering home run to left center to make the score 7-4 Lansing.
The Kernels added a consolation run in the bottom of the ninth to make the final 7-5 as Anderson Rosario singled in Mark Trumbo from third.
Jordan Timm (4-2) picked up the win in relief for Lansing and Po-Hsuan Keng got the save. Kernels reliever Mike Pete (0-2) was the tough-luck loser as he had walked the lead run that scored on Pettway's home run.
The Kernels pounded out 11 hits on the afternoon as Madison Edwards and Mark Trumbo each had two hits. The loss drops the Kernels to 19-24 in the second half and 50-63 overall. Lansing improves to 18-25.
Game three of this four game series with Lansing is Monday night at 7 pm, as Amalio Diaz makes his second start for the Kernels against lefty Chi-Hung Cheng (8-5) for the Lugnuts.
The first 500 kids, 12 and under, through the gates on Monday night receive a free Angels Back-To-School Lunchbag. It is also a WMT AM 600 Dollar Dog Monday where all regular-size hot dogs are just $1 all game.
