MWL1 Quad Cities River Bandits

Sell-out crowd sees Mulder, Swing win again

August 6, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

Rehabbing Cardinals' left-hander Mark Mulder retired 10 batters in a row at one point as the Swing of the Quad Cities beat the Clinton LumberKings, 5-2, in front of a sell-out crowd of 5,022 at John O'Donnell Stadium on Sunday evening. Tyler Greene led the offense with a home run and three RBI, while Jon Jay and Mark Hamilton also chipped in with a pair of hits.

It was a productive outing for Mulder, who was making his first start since June 20 courtesy of a stint on the Disabled List that was brought on by inflammation in his left rotator cuff. He allowed two runs - one earned - on two hits in five innings of work, striking out one while walking two. He found his groove as the game progressed, retiring 11 of the last 12 batters he faced, with a fifth-inning home run serving as the only blemish during that streak.

Quad Cities (26-17, 60-51) has now won five of their last six games while going 14-4 at home in the second half. Clinton (11-33, 34-79) got a solid outing from 18-year-old starter Omar Poveda, but for the second time this season the Swing were able to get to him in the sixth.

When Poveda faced the Swing on June 27, it was Bryan Anderson breaking up a 2-2 tie with a two-run homer in the sixth inning. On Sunday, it was Tyler Greene doing the honors. Mar Hamilton opened the inning with a fly ball to left that turned into a double when a twisting and turning John Mayberry was unable to track it down. That set the stage for Greene, a first-round pick out of Georgia Tech in 2005, to blast a towering fly ball over the fence in left. His 10th home run in 33 games with the Swing proved to be the game-winner, giving his team a 4-2 lead.

Jason Cairns (2-4) picked up the win after three scoreless innings for the Swing, allowing two hits while striking out a pair. Chris Perez struck out one while locking up the save in the ninth, and has now converted all five of his professional save opportunities.

The home team wasted no time getting on the board Sunday evening, as Shane Robinson opened the bottom of the first inning by lining a double to left. After Casey Rowlett bunted him to third, Jay's sacrifice fly to right field gave Quad Cities a 1-0 edge.

The game was tied at two when the Swing grabbed another lead in the third. The bases were empty with two outs when Rowlett got things going with a double that rolled to the wall in left-center. Jay's infield single moved the runner to third, and Hamilton followed with a liner to center that dropped in for a run-scoring single and a 2-1 lead.

Mulder was rolling into the fifth inning when Clinton pulled even again. After retiring 10 batters in a row, the southpaw's first pitch to Carlos Dominguez was hammered deep to left field, clearing the black chain link fence that sits atop the berm and sailing beyond the ballpark. Though Mulder got out of the inning with just six pitches, the home run by Dominguez tied the game at two.

Quad Cities added an insurance run in the ninth. Jay singled to lead off the inning and was at third base when Greene smacked a run-scoring double to center.

Poveda (3-12) took the loss after Greene's home run broke the deadlock, as the 18-year-old prospect gave up four runs on eight hits in six innings of work. He struck out two while walking one before former Quad City River Bandits hurler Gerry Oakes came on for the final two frames.
