Bees still can't slay Dragons

August 6, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release

Dayton, OH (August 6, 2006) The Dayton Dragons (23-20, 58-55) used three unearned runs in the fifth and a pair of solo home runs to beat the Burlington Bees (17-27, 52-59) 5-2 at Fifth Third Field this afternoon. The Dragons have won the first two games of this series and are 6-0 against the Bees this year. The Bees have now lost six straight on the road and haven't won away from Community Field since July 18th at Ft. Wayne.

The Bees were on the board first today as Jeff Howell led off the second inning with a single and scored from first on a double to the wall in deep right-center field by Carlos Arroyo. The lead didn't last long however as Bees' starter Chris Nicoll gave up a solo homer to Habelito Hernandez in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.

The Bees missed a chance for a big inning in the fourth. Howell led off with an infield hit and started this series with a hit in six straight at-bats. Dragons shortstop Adam Rosales then misplayed a line drive by Brady Everett for an error and Arroyo singled to load the bases with nobody out. Dragons starter Daniel Guerrero walked Jeremy Jirschele to force in Howell, but then got a big lift from his defense. Valentino Arce flied out to right and Everett tagged up and came towards the plate. Jay Bruce made a perfect throw and Chris Denove hung onto the ball as Everett came barreling into him to complete the double play. Guerrero (3-3) got a groundout to end the inning and got the win when the Dragons rallied in the bottom of the fifth.

With one out, Denove hit a ball straight up and Everett took his mask off, called for the ball, and was tracking it before it suddenly landed six feet behind him on the infield grass. The ball actually spun foul for a strike and Everett was charged with an error. Denove went on to walk for the only walk allowed by Nicoll in the game. Gerardo Cabrera singled and Mike DeJesus reached on a bunt single to load the bases with one away. The Bees got the second out when Mario Lisson snagged a hard line drive by Mike Griffin at third base. With Bruce at the plate, Nicoll was called for a balk that brought in Denove with the tying run and then Bruce hit a 3-2 pitch into right field to drive in the other runners to put the Dragons up 4-2 before Nicoll got out of the inning. Nicoll (4-8) would finish six innings, strike out seven, and allow just one earned run, but get his third straight losing decision. Rayner Oliveros finished the final two innings and gave up a solo homer to Cabrera in the seventh for the Dragons final run.

Logan Ondrusek struck out four in 2.2 innings of relief and came out of the game with two on and two outs in the eighth, but Bo Lanier struck out pinch-hitter Miguel Vega to end the threat and then finished the ninth for his eighth save.

The Bees and Dragons continue this series tomorrow night with a 6:00 Central Time start at Fifth Third Field. RH Erik Cordier (1-1, 2.62) will start for the Bees against LH Travis Wood (9-2, 3.91) who will be activated from the disabled list for tomorrow's game. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 5:40.
