Lansing Lugnuts News Release
Cedar Rapids, Iowa - The Cedar Rapids Kernels put together a two run, two out rally in the ninth inning to stun the Lansing Lugnuts 4-3 at Veterans Memorial Stadium Saturday night.
After retiring the first two batters of the ninth inning, Edward Rodriguez walked Flint Wipke. Madison Edwards followed Wipke and ripped a triple to right field to drive the runner home which tied the game at 3-3. Brad Coon then stepped up to smack the game winning single into right to lift the Kernels to the 4-3 walk-off win.
Lansing trailed 1-0 after one inning before knotting the game at 1-1 in the fourth on back-to-back doubles by David Hicks and Joey Metropoulos.
The Lugnuts grabbed the lead in the sixth over the Kernels. Jesus Gonzalez singled and moved to third on a Jason Armstrong double. Kernel's hurler Tommy Mendoza uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Gonzalez to score and give Lansing a 2-1 lead. Armstrong would come home on a Luke Hetherington single to make it 3-1.
Darren O'Day (2-0) got the win for the Kernels, throwing a perfect ninth for Cedar Rapids.
Rodriguez (1-2) suffered the loss for Lansing, allowing both runs in the ninth on two hits.
Lansing (57-53, 17-26) and Cedar Rapids (50-52, 19-23) will continue the series on Sunday afternoon. Adrian Martin (6-1, 5.09) will take the mound for the Lugnuts, while Andy Hill (3-8, 4.26) will hurl for the Kernels. First pitch is 3:00 p.m. EST.
