August 6, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

Second baseman Jose Martinez has been placed on the Disabled List with a bone bruise to his left foot, the Swing of the Quad Cities announced Sunday. Martinez has been replaced on the active roster by Jose Salazar, who comes to the Swing from the State College Spikes of the New York-Penn League.

Martinez, 20, was hitting .270 with seven home runs and 35 RBI as the everyday second baseman for Quad Cities. The native of Venezuela pulled up lame defensively on a groundball single up the middle in the third inning of Wednesday's game in Lansing, and has not seen game action since being replaced the next inning. The injury was suffered to the Sesamoib bone, a floating bone located in the ball of his left foot. Ranked by Baseball America as the 28th best prospect in the St. Louis Cardinals' organization prior to this season, Martinez is expected to miss two weeks of action.

Salazar, a 22-year-old infielder, was signed by the Cardinals as a non-drafted free agent following the 2006 draft after a college career at Texas A&M. He was hitting .296 with 16 runs batted in through 32 games with the State College Spikes. Salazar was an honorable mention selection to the All-Big 12 Team as a senior in 2006, hitting .308 with a .377 on-base percentage and 26 runs scored for the Aggies. He previously spent the 2005 season at Sam Houston State and the 2003 and 2004 seasons at Navarro Junior College.

The Swing of the Quad Cities roster currently stands at 25 active players, the maximum allowed by the Midwest League. An updated roster accompanies this release.
