Devil Rays explode for 13 runs in win
August 6, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays pounded the South Bend Silver Hawks all day long in their 13-10 victory. A seven run third inning gave the Rays the commanding lead but the pesky Silver Hawks kept within striking distance.
The Rays were up 1-0 as they entered the third inning. J.T. Hall led off the inning with a double to right field. Garrett Groce followed with a hard shot towards the shortstop which advanced Hall to third. Colt Simmons dropped down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners. Matt Devins then singled through the hole at second base which scored Hall and moved Groce to third. Jason St. Clair then reached first base on a fielding error which scored Groce from third. Neil Walton came to the plate next and walked. Jackson Brennan followed that by hammering a double to left-center to score all three base runners. Cesar Suarez then hit his second triple of the year to right-center field. At this point, South Bend changed pitchers but it didn't slow down the Rays. J.T. Hall welcomed the new pitcher by recording his second double of the inning to bring home Suarez. The Rays put up seven runs and left the third inning with an 8-0 lead.
Mike Wlodarczyk got the starting nod for the Rays and went 4.1 innings. Wlodarczyk struck out four batters and allowed seven hits with five runs (three earned).
Chris Kelly entered in relief of Wlodarczyk and lasted two frames. Kelly allowed two hits and two earned runs but was credited with the win. Kelly's season record now improves to 4-5.
Jackson Brennan had a standout night for the Rays at the plate. Brennan went 2-5 with two doubles and four RBI. J.T. Hall also had two doubles with one RBI and one run scored.
Cesar Suarez went 3-6 with and was a home run shy of the cycle. Suarez finished with one RBI and two runs scored. Alex Jamieson recorded a couple of RBI in Sundays match-up.
With the Rays win and a Fort Wayne loss to West Michigan the Devil Rays are now three games behind for the last playoff spot in the Eastern Division. The D-Rays and Silver Hawks will square off again on Monday night at 7:05pm. Munchie Monday returns to C.O. Brown. Every Monday home game there is a concessions item that is drastically discounted. This Monday is $1 hamburgers and $1.50 cheeseburgers.
