Reno Aces News Release
Reno, NV - The Reno Aces (22-19, 66-50) fell just short in a 4-3 loss to the Las Vegas Aviators (25-16, 59-56) Wednesday night at Greater Nevada Field.
Aaron Sanchez delivered a quality start with six innings of three run ball in his second start for Reno. Sanchez struck out three and allowed just four hits to one of the best offenses in Triple-A. The 31-year-old righty held a lethal heart of the order (Tyler Wade, Kevin Smith, and Cody Thomas) to an 0-for-9 mark, including a key 5-2-3 double play with the bases loaded and nobody out in the third.
Jake McCarthy greeted Aces fans with a two run homer in his first at-bat back in the Biggest Little City in the bottom of the second. The 425-foot bomb gave Reno a 2-0 lead before Las Vegas scored three unanswered runs. Pavin Smith led off the sixth with a triple and raced home to score in the sixth, tying the game at three. Jordan Lawlar, McCarthy, and Phillip Evans tallied multi-hit nights.
Las Vegas leaned on its bullpen behind Zack Godley for 3 1/3 innings of scoreless work. Three Aviators relievers struck out seven Aces hitters en route to the game two win. After notching 17 hits in game one, the Aces went 8-for-33 with two extra-base hits Wednesday. The Aces and Aviators continue their series Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. PT from Greater Nevada Field.
