Reno Aces News Release
Today's Game: The Aces come into Margaritaville with a 2-1 series lead with two games remaining against the Sacramento River Cats. Neftali Feliz is making his second start of the season and first at Greater Nevada Field. Ildemaro Vargas looks to keep his 12-game hit-streak alive against Sac-Town right-hander Mike Connolly. Reno is 5-5 all-time in games played on July 7 with wins coming in 2009 (10-4 vs. SAC), 2011 (4-3 @ TAC), 2014 (14-8 vs. LAS), 2015 (2-1 vs. SAC - G1), and 2017 (8-5 vs. Fresno).
Last Game: Game three of the five-game series with Sacramento went in the favor of the River Cats. Sacramento handed the Aces their 49th loss of the season last night by a score of 8-7. The Aces scored eight runs on nine hits and were led offensively by Kristopher Negron who went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Ildemaro Vargas chipped in with a 2-for-5 performance, extending his hit streak to 12. Starting pitcher Taylor Clarke had his shortest start of the season, going 2.0 innings and allowing seven runs on eight hits. Reno used five pitchers, including first baseman Cody Decker. Decker tossed one inning and allowed just one hit despite not throwing a single pitch harder than 53 miles per hour.
Cheeseburger in Paradise: The Cheeseburger in Paradise was inspired while on a boat. Starving, Jimmy Buffett stopped at a marina in Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. The overcook burgers served to him and his starving crew was thoroughly enjoyed. Midre Cummings is one of 13 players in Major League history to come from the Virgin Islands. Cummings played one season in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization, 2001, and played 77 games with the Triple-A Tucson Sidewinders. The only two active players with MLB experiences born in the Virgin Islands play for the Salt Lake Bees - Jabari Blash and Akeel Morris.
The Big 8: For many decades, Jimmy Buffett concerts use to always feature The Big 8. These were eight well-known songs that were the staple of his concerts. This has changed a bit since 2003, but The Big 8 are:
"Margaritaville", "Come Monday", "Fins", "Volcano", "A Pirate Looks at Forty", "Cheeseburger in Paradise", "Why Don't We Get Drunk" - only played occasionally, as of 2007, and "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes". Socrates Brito, Ildemaro Vargas and Kevin Cron lead the Aces in The Big 8 categories.
Brito: 18 doubles, .345 avg
Vargas: 80 games played, 100 hits, 8 triples
Cron: 15 home runs, 61 RBI, .593 Slugging Percentage
LandShark Bar and Grill: Gregor Blanco, nicknamed White Shark, is on the River Cats active roster. The outfielder spent the 2017 season in the Diamondbacks organization and appeared in one game for the Aces. On May 4, 2017, the White Shark went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a walk in Reno's 22-3 beating of Salt Lake. Blanco batted .246 in 90 games with the D-backs and totaled 55 hits on 224 AB's. This is his second stint with the San Francisco Giants organization (2012-2016, 2018) and won two World Series with the Giants in 2012 and 2014. Additionally, he was named the Wilson Team Defensive Player of the Year for San Francisco in 2013.
