Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
WILMINGTON, Del. - The Hudson Valley Renegades secured a series victory on Sunday afternoon at Frawley Stadium after defeating the Wilmington Blue Rocks 3-1. Hudson Valley finished off their 12-game road trip with an 8-4 record.
Wilmington plated the game's first run in the second inning off Sean Hermann after Branden Boissiere and Kevin Made tallied back-to-back singles to start the frame. A fielder's choice by Jared McKenzie advanced Boissiere to third base, who then came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Courtland Lawson to give the Blue Rocks a 1-0 lead.
Hermann (1-0) was the third Renegades' starter to make his High-A debut this series and he turned in a strong outing. The 20-year-old allowed just one run and struck out five in five innings. Between Hermann, Baron Stuart on Wednesday and Leandro Pestana on Saturday, the three debutantes combined to allow just one run across 14.2 innings while striking out 15.
Hudson Valley broke through in the scorer's column in the fifth inning on an Aldenis Sánchez two-run home to right-center field off Andrew Alvarez (6-4). After hitting just two home runs in his first 158 career games with the Renegades, Sánchez hit three during this two-week road trip and is up to a career-high four on the season.
In the top of the seventh, Alexander Vargas doubled and then advanced to third base on a pickoff attempt throwing error from Matt Merrill. A few pitches later, Vargas scored from third on a wild pitch from Merrill to pad their lead to 3-1.
Harrison Cohen retired all six hitters he faced before he turned the ball over to Luis Velasquez who worked around a few baserunners in the eighth. Carter Kieboom walked and Boissiere singled to place runners on the corners with one out. Velasquez induced an inning-ending double play to keep the Blue Rocks off the board.
In the bottom of the ninth Cortland Lawson laced a one-out double off Clay Aguilar to bring the tying run to the plate. Sammy Infante pinch hit for Caleb Farmer with two outs and drove the first pitch of the at-bat to the warning track in left, but the ball was caught by Sánchez to end the contest.
The Renegades finished off their two-week road trip with an 8-4 record, and return home to Heritage Financial Park sporting a season-best record of 14 games over .500. After an off day on Monday, the Renegades return to Heritage Financial Park to begin a six-game series against the Jersey Shore BlueClaws on Tuesday. First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with coverage on the Renegades Baseball Network beginning at 6:45 p.m.
Renegades Record: 58-44, 19-17
