Early Lead Not Enough for the Blue Rocks to Close out the Renegades
August 6, 2023 - South Atlantic League (SAL)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
The Wilmington Blue Rocks (42-58) were defeated by the Hudson Valley Renegades (58-44) in their series-finale on Sunday, August 6 by a final score of 3-1.
The Blue Rocks kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly by Courtland Lawson, scoring Branden Boissiere. Unfortunately, the scoring would stop there for Wilmington.
In the top of the fifth, Hudson Valley took the 2-1 lead with a two-run bomb by Aldenis Sanchez, his fourth of the season. Then, some insurance was added in the top of the seventh when Matt Merrill fired a wild pitch that allowed Alexander Vargas to score from third and make it 3-1.
Blue Rocks' starter Andrew Alvarez took his fourth loss of the season, which wasn't due to a lackluster performance, however. The 24-year-old southpaw tossed six solid innings, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out five. Renegades' starter Sean Herrmann was equally dominant, pitching five innings of one-run ball, allowing six hits and striking out five.
With the Rocks' offense scoring just one run, they've averaged 1.6 per game in their last five games. Boissiere was the only player to record a multi-hit game on Sunday, going 2-4 at the plate and scoring Wilmington's only run.
The Blue Rocks will now embark on a 12-game homestand, beginning on Tuesday, August 8 against the Bowling Green Hot Rods at 7:35 p.m. EST.
