Renegades Downed by Cyclones 5-1

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - In the final game in the first half of the South Atlantic League season, the Hudson Valley Renegades fell to the Brooklyn Cyclones 5-1 on Thursday night at Maimonides Park.

The Renegades plated their lone run in the second inning off Tyler Stuart (2-0). On the first pitch of the inning, Antonio Gómez blasted his third home run of the season off the scoreboard in left to hand the Renegades a 1-0 lead. Gómez finished the night with two of the Renegades' five hits.

After Joel Valdez walked a tight rope in the first three innings leaving six men on base, the Cyclones broke through in the fourth with five runs. Valdez issued a walk to Mateo Gil to begin the inning and the Renegades went to the bullpen. Luis Velasquez (0-1) came on and after recording the first out, the next two men reached to load the bases. Abraham Almonte hit a two-run bloop single to left to give the Cyclones a 2-1 advantage. Alex Ramirez then scored on a wild pitch by Velasquez to extend the lead, and William Lugo capped off the game's scoring with a solo-home run to left field.

Outside of the five-run inning, Bailey Dees struck out four across 2.1 scoreless frames and Clay Aguilar struck out the side in order in the eighth. In total, the 'Gades pitching staff struck out 17 Cyclones on the night.

Despite the loss on Thursday, the Renegades finished the first half of the season with the best record in the South Atlantic League at 39-27. The Renegades and Cyclones begin the second half of the season on Friday at Maimonides Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. with coverage on the Renegades Baseball Network beginning at 6:45 p.m. The Renegades will send RHP Zach Messinger (0-4, 2.44) to the hill opposite of RHP Blade Tidwell (3-3, 4.14) for the Cyclones.
