WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Zach Remillard hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead the Dash to a 4-3 victory over the Fayetteville Woodpeckers on Wednesday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark.
With one out and runners at the corners, Remillard hit a hard groundball past Fayetteville (21-25) third baseman Enmanuel Valdez and into left field to score Nick Madrigal and end the ballgame. It was the second walk-off hit of the season for Winston-Salem (23-22), and it was the second hit of the ballgame for Remillard.
To set up the walk-off, Luis Ledo worked a scoreless top of the 10th. With Valdez placed at second base, Ledo struck out Michael Papierski for the first out. After Alfredo Angarita singled to push Valdez to third, Ledo induced a ground ball double play off the bat of Jacob Meyers to keep the score tied at three.
A wild ninth inning set the stage for extras. With the score tied at two In the top of the ninth, Fayetteville catcher Scott Manea hit a solo home run just inside the left-field foul pole to give the Woodpeckers a 3-2 lead. But, in the bottom of the ninth, Jordan George led off the frame by belting a solo shot just inside the right-field foul pole to tie the score at three.
Prior to the fireworks in the ninth, the game was a pitchers duel. Dash starter Lincoln Henzman worked seven strong innings, allowing just two earned runs on six hits while striking out four and walking one. Meanwhile, Woodpeckers starter Enoli Paredes allowed just one run on three hits with five strikeouts against one walk.
Fayetteville got on the board first in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Scott Schreiber doubled down the left-field line before reaching third on a wild pitch. Colton Shaver then blooped a single into right field to score Schreiber and make it 1-0.
Winston-Salem knotted the score in the bottom of the fifth inning. Carlos Perez led off the frame by singling down the left field line before reaching second on a wild pitch. After Jordan George was hit by a pitch, Tate Blackman flew out into center field, advancing Perez to third. Tyler Frost then hit a fly ball deep enough to score Perez and tie the ballgame.
The Woodpeckers regained the lead in the top of the sixth. With one out, Jonathan Arauz grounded a double down the left-field line. Following a groundout by Schreiber, Shaver flared a single into center field scoring Arauz to give Fayetteville a 2-1 edge.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth, the Dash benefitted from clutch two-out hitting. First, Remillard doubled into the right-field corner. Craig Dedelow then deposited a single into center field to score Remillard and tie the game at two. The clutch hits in the eighth marked the second of three one-run comebacks Winston-Salem made on the day.
The Dash conclude their series with the Woodpeckers on Thursday night. Left-hander John Parke (1-2, 3.63 ERA) will take the ball for Winston-Salem against Fayetteville right-hander JP France (0-4, 5.58 ERA).
