Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced today that right-hander Cory Burns and southpaw Joseph Ortiz have been activated after being optioned back to the Round Rock Express. In a corresponding move, catcher Eli Whiteside has been placed on the 7-Day Disabled List.
Burns logged nine appearances out of the Texas bullpen over two stints with the Rangers this season. The right-hander posted a 1-0 record with a 1.64 ERA (11.0 IP/2 ER) over his time in the big leagues. Before his latest recall on July 7, Burns had registered a 1.05 ERA (25.2 IP/3 ER) and 16 saves in 26 games with the Express. Burns last pitched for the Rangers on July 21 against the Baltimore Orioles, turning in 1.0 scoreless inning in relief.
Ortiz returns to Round Rock's roster after 25 games with the Rangers over three separate stints. Ortiz had pitched in nine games with the Express before his latest recall on July 11, posting a 1-1 record and 3.68 ERA (14.2 IP/6 ER) at Round Rock. Ortiz has gone 2-1 with a 3.96 ERA (36.1 IP/16 ER) in 25 games with the Rangers, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings of relief in his final outing with the club on July 20 against the Baltimore Orioles.
Whiteside has spent the entire season with the Express, batting .168 (31-for-185) with four home runs and 21 RBI. The backstop is in the midst of a 3-for-32 (.094) slump but went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored in last night's game against the Memphis RedBirds.
After these moves, the current Express roster sits at 25 active players.
The Express and RedBirds continue a four-game series at AutoZone Park tonight with a 7:05 p.m. start time. Right-hander Scott Richmond (3-3, 5.82 ERA) takes the mound for Round Rock while Memphis counters with Michael Wacha (4-2, 2.78 ERA).
