
Zephyrs Edge Iowa 2-1 in Ten

DES MOINES, Iowa - Kevin Kouzmanoff drilled a two out single scoring Bryan Petersen and the Zephyrs edged the Iowa Cubs 2-1 in ten innings in front of 7,009 fans at Principal Park.
Another classic pitchers duel in Des Moines between the Zephyrs and Cubs. Tuesday night the Cubs beat the Z's 1-0. Wednesday was looking the same way. The game was scoreless through six innings. Nick Green drilled a solo home run to left field to give the visiting Zephyrs a 1-0 lead.
Doug Mathis pitched six shutout innings allowing six hits and struck-out three. Iowa starter Brooks Raley worked seven innings allowing one run on three hits.
The Cubs and Zephyrs threatened several times during the game with the Zephyrs going one for nine with runners in scoring position and Iowa went two for eleven. The Z's stranded nine and Iowa 11.
In the ninth inning the Cubs put together three consecutive singles off New Orleans closer Chris Hatcher. Donnie Murphy grounded to shortstop with one out but the Zephyrs could not turn the double play and the Cubs scored the tying run.
Bryan Petersen reached in the tenth inning on a walk and scored on the Kouzmanoff single. Hatcher pitched the bottom of the tenth to earn his second win of the season.
The Z's lead the series 2-1 and improve to 52-53 on the season.
Game Notes - The Zephyrs are now 9-2 in extra innings. The blown save by Hatcher is his second of the season, he is now 27 for 29. It snapped a streak of twenty consecutive converted saves. New Orleans improved to 40-13 when scoring first.
