MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Backed by a solid pitching performance from starter Josh Lindblom, the Round Rock Express (59-45) beat the Memphis Redbirds (49-55) 5-2 Tuesday night at AutoZone Park.
Designated hitter Manny Ramirez led off the offense in the second inning with a single. In the next at-bat, third baseman Robinson Chirinos blasted his sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot, to give the E-Train an early 2-0 lead.
The Redbirds answered back in the bottom of the third inning, scoring two runs on a fielding error by second baseman Yangervis Solarte to tie the game.
Catcher Eli Whiteside led off the fifth inning with a double and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Aaron Cunningham to regain the lead, 3-2.
Lindblom held the Memphis offense hitless in the fourth through sixth innings before being replaced by reliever Ben Rowen to start the seventh. Lindblom went 6.0 innings, giving up two unearned runs on two hits. He walked three and struck out three as he picked up his team-leading eighth win.
The Express offense added another run in the seventh and ninth innings. Shortstop Greg Miclat roped a two-out double in the seventh and scored on a fielding error by Redbirds' Kolten Wong. Cunningham hit a two-out single in the ninth and came around to score on a single by Solarte to give Round Rock a solid three-run lead.
Express relievers Nate Robertson and Wilmer Font combined for the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one walk and striking out three. Font picked up his second save with the Express this season. Memphis starter Nick Greenwood suffered the loss, dropping to 2-4 on the season.
The Express and Redbirds will continue the four game series tomorrow night with game three. Round Rock will send RHP Scott Richmond (3-3, 5.82 ERA) to face Memphis starter RHP Michael Wacha (4-2, 2.78 ERA).
