Iowa Cubs News Release
Des Moines, IA - 3B Mike Olt and RHP Justin Grimm have been added to the Iowa Cubs active roster. Olt and Grimm were both acquired by Chicago from Texas on Monday as part of the trade the sent RH Matt Garza to the Rangers. Both players are members of the Chicago Cubs' 40-man roster.
Olt, 24, was a supplemental first round pick (49th overall) by Texas in the 2010 draft out of the University of Connecticut and entered this season ranked by Baseball America as the second-best prospect in the Rangers' organization and the 19th-best prospect in all of minor league baseball according to MLB.com. Olt was batting .213 (49-for-230) with 15 doubles, 11 home runs, and 32 RBI in 65 games with Round Rock this season. He had a stint on the disabled list from April 26 to May 30 with vision problems and played three games at double-A Frisco before returning to the Express. Last year, Olt was the Rangers' Tom Grieve Minor League Player of the Year after batting .288 (102-for-354) with 17 doubles, 28 home runs, and 82 RBI in 95 games. He was called up to Texas on August 2 and still led all double-A players in home runs and OPS (.977) at the end of the season. Olt hit .152 (5-for-33) with five RBI in 16 games with Texas while being limited by plantar fasciitis in his right heel.
Grimm, 24, opened this season at triple-A Round Rock and made one start before getting called up to join the Rangers' rotation. In 17 starts, Grimm was 7-7 with a 6.37 ERA (63ER/89.0IP) prior to the trade. The Rangers drafted Grimm in the fifth round of the 2010 draft out of the University of Georgia. Grimm began last season at double-A Frisco and was called up to make his major league debut on June 16 in a start against the Houston Astros. Entering this season he was rated by Baseball America as the Rangers' top right-handed starter and fifth-best prospect overall. Grimm will join Iowa's starting rotation and make his Cubs' debut on Friday night in Oklahoma City.
The Cubs sent LHP Jeff Antigua to high-A Daytona in the Florida State League. In three stints with Iowa, Antigua is 2-1 with a 4.61 ERA (14ER/27.1IP) in 11 games, including one start. When Antigua makes his first appearance with Daytona, he will have pitched with all four of Chicago's full-season affiliates. IF/OF Tim Torres has been placed on the disabled list with a calf strain. Torres is batting .203 (15-for-74) with a home run and five RBI in 34 games in his two stints with Iowa this season.
The Cubs play game three of a four-game series against New Orleans tonight at 7:05. LH Brooks Raley (6-7, 5.09) will start for the Cubs against RH Doug Mathis (5-7, 3.86) for the Zephyrs. All of the action will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed live on iowacubs.com, with the pre-game show starting at 6:45.
