(ALTOONA, PA)- Cam Reimers tossed eight shutout innings and Dominic Rich doubled in the only run in New Haven's 1-0 victory over the Altoona Curve on Thursday night at Blair County Ballpark.

Reimers (8-3), who entered Thursday with the Eastern League's seventh-best ERA, scattered just seven hits while walking none and striking out six to claim the victory. Adam Peterson, the Ravens' flame-throwing closer, came on to retire the Curve 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth to earn his fourth save and seal New Haven's third win of the series.

New Haven (56-47) becomes the first team to beat the Curve in a series since June 2-4, when Portland swept an abbreviated two-game set at Blair County Ballpark. With the loss, Altoona (59-43) falls five games behind first-place Akron in the race for the Eastern League's top spot. The Aeros defeated Harrisburg 3-1 Thursday night.

Curve starter John VanBenschoten (5-1) pitched well, but suffered his first defeat of the 2003 season and his first since July 7, 2002 while pitching for low Class-A Hickory.

The Pirates' top prospect allowed the game's only run after two were out in the top of the second inning. Danny Solano doubled to extend the inning and, one batter later, Rich drilled a two-bagger over the head of right-fielder Brett Roneberg to give the Ravens a 1-0 lead it would not relinquish.

VanBenschoten left the game after six innings, allowing that one run on seven hits, walking none and striking out four to drop his combined season record to 11-1 between Lynchburg and Altoona.

The trio of Rick Palma, Jeff Bennett and newcomer Anastacio Martinez each tossed a scoreless frame over the game's final three innings to keep the margin at just one run.

Josh Bonifay recorded the Curve's lone two-hit game in club's seven-hit effort. Shaun Skrehot went 0-for-4, thus ending his team season-high 13-game hitting streak.

Former Penn State star Shawn Fagan led the Ravens with three hits and finished the four-game series with nine hits in 18 at-bats. Rich (2-for-4) and John-Ford Griffin (2-for-4) recorded the other multi-hit games for New Haven, which pounded out 12 hits in the contest.

Losers of four of its last five games, the Curve will head to Bowie to open a three-game series against the Baysox over the weekend. In the opener of the set on Friday, the Curve will send left-hander Mike Connolly (4-6, 4.11) to the mound to oppose Bowie right-hander Mike Paradis (4-7, 5.44). Gametime is set for 7:05 p.m. from Prince George's Stadium.

The Curve will next return home on Monday when it opens a three-game series against the New Britain Rock Cats (Minnesota Twins). Monday and Tuesday's contests will begin at 7:05 p.m., while Wednesday's first pitch will be thrown at 12:05 p.m.

POST-GAME NOTES: The Curve made a roster move prior to the game, placing OF Shawn Garrett on the Temporary Inactive List and adding C Chris Snusz to the active roster. Garrett and his wife Breanne welcomed the birth of a daughter, Sydney Alexis on Thursday afternoon at Altoona Hospital. The baby weighed 5 lbs, 14 oz. and measured 17 inches... 1B/DH Chan Perry was scratched from the starting lineup just prior to the game after still feeling the effects of ball that was fouled off his foot in Wednesday night's game... Not only did Skrehot fail to record a hit to extend his hitting streak, but he also remains just one hit behind Rico Washington on the Curve's career hits list. Skrehot, who has spent parts of the last four seasons with Altoona, has posted 297 hits in 322 games in a Curve uniform... Kevin Nicholson went 1-for-4 and has now hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games... Chris Heintz now owns the Curve's longest hitting streak at seven games
