Ontario Reign News Release
ONTARIO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign (28-8-2-3), back-to-back Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, showed off a strong new line with Maxim Kistyn, Gasper Kopitar, and Riley Brace with 4-2 win over the Colorado Eagles (21-12-5-2) on Wednesday night before a crowd of 6,318 at Citizens Business Bank Arena.
At the 6:12 mark of the first period, Brace gave Ontario a 1-0 lead in his Reign debut. Kitsyn and Kopitar helped set up the goal with a play behind the Eagles net. Kitsyn's wrap-around attempt was initially denied by Marc Cheverie, but the Eagles netminder did not cover the puck completely with his pads, allowing Brace to crash the net and jam the puck over the goal line.
A Reign penalty put Colorado on the man-advantage about halfway through the second period. A quick wrist shot from Trent Daavettila made its way past the pads of Jussi Olkinuora 29 seconds into the power play to tie the game 1-1. The Brace, Kitsyn, Kopitar line struck again at 13:14 of the second period. Kopitar took a shot on Cheverie which rebounded right to Brace for a backdoor tap-in.
Kitsyn continued to generate offense as he scored the Reign's third goal of the night to earn his third point of the game. The winger flew into the Eagles zone and snapped a wrister past Cheverie top shelf at 4:25.
Sebastian Stalberg also tallied a point in his Reign debut, scoring a beautiful power-play goal at the 7:21 mark of the third period. Jake Newton and Matt Register added the helpers. Colorado cut the Reign's lead in half with their second marker of the night at 10:33 by Brock Nixon.
In an attempt to tack on some more goals, the Eagles pulled Cheverie with 1:50 to go in regulation but the Reign held on to their 4-2 lead.
Olkinuora earned his second straight win with 18 saves; Cheverie took the loss with 16 saves.
