Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Traverse City Beach Bums won their fifth game in a row, shutting out the Florence Freedom 5-0 on Monday night to conclude a homestand.

Kevin Reese went the distance, throwing his first career complete game and shutout to tally his team leading seventh victory. It was the first complete game shutout of the season for the Beach Bums. Reese threw 134 pitches in his nine innings of work and matched a Beach Bums single game record by striking out 10. He retired the first 13 hitters of the game before a double by Florence's Justin Pickett in the fifth. Reese struck out two batters in four innings, and capped the shutout by striking out Florence's All-Star second baseman Billy Mottram.

The Beach Bums gave Reese all the support he would need in the second inning, scoring without a hit. Andrew Barbaro walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Mike Victor then walked and another wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Anthony D'Alfonso got the Beach Bums on the board with a sacrifice fly.

Robby Alcombrack extended the lead to 3-0 with one swing in the fifth. After Brian Lapin singled, Alcombrack took the first pitch from Florence starter Chuck Tiffany, a former second round pick, over the leftfield wall for his team leading seventh homer of the season. The Beach Bums were able to cap the scoring in the eighth when Mike Epping singled, stole second and third, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Barbaro.

Florence managed just four hits in the game against Reese and had only one runner reach third base, Tim Grogan in the ninth inning with two outs. Chuck Tiffany threw five innings to take the loss in his first start for the Freedom. Traverse City got seven hits from seven different players.

The Beach Bums hit the road tomorrow to meet the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti at Eastern Michigan University's Oestrike Stadium in a 7:05 pm contest. RHP Brett Bostelman (6-4, 3.59) takes the ball for the Beach Bums against RHP Jeff Fischer (4-2, 3.44).
