Grizzlies drop finale to Miners

MARION, IL-The Southern Illinois Miners scored eight unanswered runs Monday night to come-from-behind and defeat the Gateway Grizzlies 11-5 in the finale of a three-game series at Rent One Park. The Miners won the last two games in the series to take the series.

The Grizzlies (27-38) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on three hits against former Grizzlie Adam Revelette, making his first start of the year. Charlie Lisk doubled off the center field wall, and Chad Rothford followed with his 13th homer of the year, a two-run drive to left. The homer was his second of the series. He finished the night 2-3.

The Miners (35-30) answered with three runs in the first inning to take a 3-2 lead.

The Grizzlies chased Revelette with a run in the second inning and two more in the third to take a 5-3 after three innings. Danny Morrow drove in a pair of runs with a third inning double. Revelette allowed five runs in just three innings. The Miners' bullpen took over from there. Ryan Kussmaul and Chris Stewart combined to shut out the Grizzlies over the final six innings. Kussmaul earned the win going 3.2 innings, allowing only two hits.

Southern Illinois took the lead with a single run in the fourth and three more in the fifth inning, all coming against Grizzlies starter Paige Dumont. Dumont (4-3) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on 10 hits. He walked three and struck out two.

Joseph Scaperotta and Jareck West were each 2-4 for the Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies continue the road trip with a three-game series at Windy City beginning Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 pm at Standard Bank Stadium.
