RedHawks win over Iowa

Oklahoma City - The Oklahoma City RedHawks overcame an early deficit and held the Iowa Cubs scoreless over the final eight innings in a 3-2 win Saturday in front of 6,655 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

American Northern Division leader Iowa (47-41) took a 2-0 lead on two hits in the top of the first inning. Oklahoma City's pitching staff then held the I-Cubs to two hits the remainder of the game as the RedHawks (47-43) took a 2-0 lead in the three-game series.

Robbie Grossman led the RedHawks with two hits, scored two runs and stole two bases as he extended his hitting streak to 16 games - the longest active streak in the PCL and the longest by a RedHawk this season.

A double by Javy Baez drove home the first run of the night for the I-Cubs in the first inning on a fly ball to deep center field. Two batters later, Kris Bryant hit a RBI single for a 2-0 Iowa lead.

Grossman led off the bottom of the frame with a ground-rule double and Jonathan Villar walked. Then with one out, Austin Wates struck out swinging and the RedHawks converted a double steal. Villar stole second base and Grossman stole home to cut the Iowa lead to 2-1.

Matt Duffy tied the game, 2-2, in the second inning on a solo home run on a line drive to left-center field. The homer was his eighth of the season.

In the third inning with Wates batting, the RedHawks pulled off a double steal. Carlos Perez entered the game to pinch run for Jonathan Villar, who suffered an apparent injury, and stole second base. Grossman stole third, then scored on an errant throw by Iowa catcher Rafael Lopez to put the RedHawks in front, 3-2.

RedHawks starting pitcher Paul Clemens (4-0) allowed two runs on four hits over five innings in the win. He walked three and struck out six.

RedHawks pitchers Jorge De Leon, Jason Stoffel and Kevin Chapman pitched the final four innings, holding the I-Cubs hitless and scoreless. Chapman pitched the ninth inning and earned his fourth save of the season.

Iowa starting pitcher Carlos Pimentel (1-5) allowed three runs on five hits. He walked three and struck out five in the loss.

Oklahoma City won a seventh straight game against Iowa, dating to last season, and now trails the I-Cubs by one game in the division standings.

The RedHawks conclude their three-game series with Iowa at 6:05 p.m. Sunday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Select players will be available for autographs prior to the game and kids can run the bases after the game.
