FRESNO, Calif --- The Fresno Grizzlies (43-46) dropped their series opener to the Tacoma Rainiers (41-46) by a score of 11-7 in front of 11,988 fans on Fourth of July evening at Chukchansi Park. Tacoma started the game with six runs over the first two innings and never relinquished the lead despite an admirable comeback effort by the Grizzlies.

Stefen Romero paced the Tacoma offense by drilling two homer runs, both off starter Edwin Escobar (L, 3-8). His three-run homer in the first gave them a 3-0 lead, while his solo shot in the fifth put them up 9-4. Jesus Montero also contributed a monster night at the plate, going 5-5 with a double, homer and six RBI. Between Romero and Montero, the duo combined for seven of the 17 Tacoma hits and 10 of the 11 RBI.

Escobar surrendered a career-high nine runs (six earned) on 10 hits over 4.2 innings of work. The six earned are the most he's allowed in an outing since April 16, 2011 with Low-A Augusta (seven earned runs), while the three homers allowed are a career-high. Escobar has served up 15 homers this season (100.0 IP) after allowing 21 combined in his previous five seasons (419.1 IP).

Fresno received a jolt in the bottom of the first with a leadoff homer from Gary Brown (7), which marks back-to-back home games he's led off the bottom of the first with a homer. Andrew Susac went 4-4 on the night with three singles and a double (his first four-hit game of the season), making him the only Fresno batter with more than one hit (11 team total).

The Grizzlies cut the deficit to 3-2 in the first, but saw Tacoma's lead grow until narrowing the gap back within three after a homer by Ehire Adrianza (1) in the seventh. With two outs and runners on first and second in the bottom of the seventh, Mark Minicozzi stepped to the plate representing the tying run. However, reliever Logan Kensing induced a groundout to shortstop to erase the threat.

Chris Dominguez launched his 11th homer of the year in the fourth, a two-run shot.

The Grizzlies fall to 8-9 all-time on Fourth of July games since the inaugural season in 1998.

Fresno aims to rebound from the loss tomorrow evening during Military Appreciation Night. All past and current military can receive free admission by showing proof of military service. Expected to get the starting nod for Fresno is left-hander Jose De Paula (1-3-1, 4.86 ERA), who will square off against lefty James Gillheeney (3-6, 5.58 ERA). The first 2,000 fans will receive Aviator sunglasses, courtesy of PG&E.
