Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. - The RedHawks lineup exploded for 11 runs - including nine in the third - to help lead Fargo-Moorhead to an 11-9 defeat of the Sioux City Explorers Saturday in front of a sellout crowd of 5,002 fans at Newman Outdoor Field.
With the largest crowd of the season in attendance, Fargo-Moorhead (41-26) picked up 17 hits in the game - nine alone in the nine-run third inning.
Trailing 3-0, C.J. Retherford, Tim Alberts, Buddy Sosnoskie and Mitch Einertson all had RBI base-hits in the third for the RedHawks, before a Ronnie Bourquin grand slam capped off the inning by giving the RedHawks a 9-3 lead.
Sioux City (26-41) scored three runs combined in the fourth and fifth to narrow the margin to three, but a Nic Jackson two-run home run in the fifth put the game out of reach.
Eight players in the Fargo-Moorhead lineup reached base on a hit. Bourquin went 4-for-5 with his 9th home run of the season and a double. Zach Penprase had three hits and scored two runs and Nic Jackson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two walks.
Jackson's home run in the fifth was his 58 th as a RedHawk, moving him into third all-time in club history behind Jesse Hoorelbeke (65) and Darryl Motley (64).
Jake Laber improved to 5-5 this season after pitching five innings for the RedHawks. Laber gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts. Nate Kilcrease pitched three scoreless innings out the bullpen and Joe Harris got the final two outs of the ninth for Fargo-Moorhead to earn his second save of the season.
Sam Judah, Austin Gallagher, Brian Pounds and Alberto Espinosa had two hits apiece for the Explorers. Gallagher drove in two of the Explorers' runs, including an RBI single in a three-run ninth for Sioux City.
Preston Olson (1-4) lasted only 2 1/3 innings in the loss for Sioux City. He allowed 11 hits and eight runs. Jonathan Rodriguez gave up three runs in 3 2/3 innings of relief, while Nathan Stewart pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings.
The RedHawks and Explorers conclude their three-game series at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, at Newman Outdoor Field. Tickets are available at fmredhawks.com or by calling (701) 235-6161.
