Saints Spell Double Trouble for RailCats in 6-1 Victory

ST.PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints used a great start by Billy Soule and solid glove work behind him to beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats 6-1 on Saturday night in front of 5,383 fans at Midway Stadium. The Saints turned a double play in each of the first three innings and finished the night with four twin killings to keep the RailCats off the board for most of the evening.

Willie Cabrera helped the Saints get off on the right foot by driving in Adam Frost and Brad Boyer with a three-run home run in the first inning off of RailCats starter Morgan Coombs. It was Cabrera's 10th homer of the season and he finished the night 3-4 with three RBI.

The Saints offense continued to apply pressure to the RailCats pitching staff, tacking on lone runs in both the third and fourth innings. Brandon Tripp doubled home the run in the third, while Adam Frost brought in Dwight Childs with a sacrifice fly to center in the fourth. Those insurance runs pushed the Saints lead to 5-0.

The Gary offense finally got to Billy Soule in the sixth inning when, with two outs, Adam Klein doubled and the very next batter Mike Massaro followed with an RBI single to trim the Saints lead to 6-1. That was all Soule would allow, however, working 6.0 innings and allowing just the single run on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts. He would eventually earn the victory, the first of his professional career.

The Saints added another run in the eighth inning just for good measure when Dan Kaczrowski drove in Brandon Tripp with a two out infield single.

Mikey Mehlich worked 2.0 scoreless innings in relief of Soule and then Dustin Klabunde closed the door on the Railcats by shutting them out in the ninth.

The two clubs will meet again Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. in the series finale. RHP Anthony Claggett (6-3, 3.95) takes the mound for the Saints, while the RailCats counter with RHP Stephen Hiscock (0-1, 3.00). Meet the 2013 Hall of Fame Class during the ballgame. Also, the first 500 kids 14 and under receive the 2013 Saints team baseball card set. The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM and in the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
