RH Tanner Scheppers (1-0, 1.89) vs. RH Vicente Padilla (no record)
TODAY: After combining to go 1-0 with 3 saves and a 1.50 ERA in 30 relief innings between Frisco and OKC this season, Tanner Scheppers will make his first start in affiliated baseball as he's activated off the DL to go against the Albuquerque Isotopes in the final game of a 4-game series. Scheppers has been on the DL since June 5 with a strained left hamstring. He was selected in the supplemental first round in 2009 with the 44th overall pick and is in his first season of affiliated play. Albuquerque leads the series 2-1 after an 8-3 win last night. Former Ranger Vicente Padilla, rehabbing elbow soreness, gets the start for the Isotopes.
OPENING ACTS: Albuquerque gathered 5 runs in the first inning last night on the way to an 8-3 win. The 5 runs were the second-most in a frame by an OKC opponent this season after a 6-run inning by Memphis April 27.
MARGINAL: Last night's 5-run margin of defeat matched OKC's largest of the year, previously obtained with an 8-3 setback vs. New Orleans May 1 and a 6-1 loss in Iowa May 9.
ON THE LINE: OKC has had sole possession of first place in the American South Division since winning in Memphis April 16. With a half-game lead, OKC needs a win today to maintain first place. The RedHawks have dropped 9 of their last 11 at home, but have won 10 of their last 15 on the road.
STREAKY: Chris Davis went 0-for-3 with a sacrifice fly last night to bring his 10-game hitting streak to an end. Mitch Moreland's 6-game hitting streak was halted with an 0-for-2 with a walk and 1 RBI. Moreland has at least 1 RBI in each game this series, 6 total. Ryan Garko brings a 21-game on-base streak into tonight spanning every game he has played since coming down from Texas. Brandon Boggs has reached in 18 straight and is tied for fourth in the league in walks (with Esteban German) with 36.
PLUS/MINUS: The RedHawks own the best run differential in the league, having scored 313 runs while allowing 246, +67. Fresno is second at +64. The Durham Bulls of the International League have the best run differential among Triple-A teams with a +127, having scored 362 while allowing 235 runs in building the IL's best record as 38-25.
PITCHING TOPS IN PCL: OKC leads the PCL in team ERA at 3.51 despite allowing 21 runs in the first 3 games of this series. The RedHawks' ERA was 3.33 when the series started. Omaha is second at 3.67. The RedHawks have allowed the fewest home runs in the league (31), 13 fewer than the closest team, Tacoma. OKC has allowed the fewest runs (246) and earned runs (213), while compiling the third-most strikeouts (457) behind Sacramento (458) and Albuquerque (458).
BULLPEN UPDATE: In the past 26 games, OKC's bullpen has worked 100.2 innings, allowing 22 earned runs (a 1.97 ERA) on 67 hits while going 6-2. The bullpen's collective ERA is 3.42. The starters' is 3.58.
GOING DEEP: OKC has 52 homers, tied for fifth-most in the PCL, but has not homered this series. The RedHawks have 25 homers at The Brick and 27 on the road. Half of OKC's homers (26 of 52) have been with 2 outs in an inning. Thirteen homers have tied the score or given them the lead in the fifth inning or later. The 2009 RedHawks had 7 such homers in all of last season. OKC has been out-homered 3-0 in this series and 8-4 in the season series. When the RedHawks hit a home run, they are 22-11. When homerless, they're 11-17.
COOLBAUGH IN COMMAND: RedHawks hitting coach Scott Coolbaugh wraps up his stint as OKC's interim manager today. Coolbaugh has subbed for manager Bobby Jones, who is completing the Ranger-mandated 4-game vacation required of all field staff members.
